Wonder how many people at the time hated the beresford building for being too modern and overpowering?

Not saying I like the proposal but style has to move on or what you end up with is the city centre equivelant of one of these brand new housing estates built in the style of a cotswald village.

If the developers are brave enough it will be built. If their gamble fails, nobody will move in and it wont last very long. Im willing to bet that 99% of people who walk down Sauchihall st dont even realise there are 1st and 2nd floors on the buildings so as long as the shop or ground floor entrance is acceptable its only going to be us on HG who actually care about the rest.

I would like to see something i can look at 30 years time and still go Wow! I am sorry if that sounds over simplistic but unless i have to live or work in a building that is all i as a layman ask of it.You obviously love Beetles and they still make me go wow too when i see one.Not because they are different but because they are timeless.Dont know if i could live with one everyday though.

And thats coming from a Mini owner.

I'm not especially taken by the proposal for the gap site but it's certainly a great deal more interesting than Newton House (across the road) from where I took the original photograph.

If we use Beetles as an example. Henry ford reffered to it as a "shitty little car" and the Rootes car group were offered the factory for free but turned it down as they saw no future in the design. It was frowned upon by war veterans and seen as odd and different when released but eventually came good.

The beresford hotel was disliked when new but much loved now.

All Im saying about that design is its never going to be to everybodys taste but at least its a bit different and as such may push design in a new direction.

Im personally not keen on it looking at the pictures but Im not an archietect so couldnt do better and Im not paying for it or living beside it so finding it hard to object to it.

Looks like the architects kid has dropped Dads Lego model when his back was turned and put it together without him noticing . . . . as they do.
