Historically, they usually were spread out through the week, with a viewing on the Monday and the auction commencing on the Tuesday, and so on with each firm having 'their' day for a sale - this was long before Bonhams etc muscled in. I'm still not aware of an auction house that is open regularly on a Saturday for a sale, but there's always Blochairn Market's car boot sales on Sunday morning....

Wasn't sure where to post this but any helpful replies would be appreciated.

My aunt in Glasgow has things in her flat which she wants to get rid of but is not sure what to do with.
The items in question are a set of golf clubs and some skis which might be fifty years old at a guess.
She played golf at Douglas Park I think but not sure when she last used them and I suspect not for a wee while.

I found this site while I was looking up some stuff.

http://www.vintageskiworld.com/
but it is an American one and I wonder should she get someone out to look at them or take them to an auction room?

Have you thought of Ebay? You would probably get as much on there as you would selling through an auction house. Going through an auction house can be expensive as there are plenty of fees to be paid, also with specialised items like vintage golf clubs and skis you are not guaranteed to sell a a decent price, as you need more than one collector of these particular items to be bidding in order to drive the price up, Ebay is open to a world wide market.
Check for similar items on Ebay and see how well they perform, sometimes timing can be important, patience can get you a higher price.

If you still think that the suction house is your best course of action, try Great Western Auctions http://www.greatwesternauctions.com/at 1291 Dumbarton Road, they have regular Saturday Auctions. Mrs Alycidon will be going there May to take part in the BBC show Bargain Hunt!!

Thanks for your help and I will keep those options in mind.

Is Bargain Hunt to be shown in May or just filmed then?

The process takes some time, initial filming took place at Garrion Bridge antiques centre near Wishaw last Wednesday and the second day of filming takes place at Great Western Auctions on 9th May. There will be some weeks post production with AFAIK the new series airing at the end of May/beginning of June.

Anybody any thoughts about what to do with old books which may be valuable?

When we were over in Glasgow in July we took a huge pile of recent paperbacks to the Oxfam shop on Byres Road.

There are quite a number of old books some of which may be first editions in my aunts flat but not sure what to do with them. Some have dates prior to 1900 written on them on inside pages.
One set of books that caught my eye had a swastika printed on the spine but on close examination I noticed they were printed prior to Hitler and the Nazi Party. Think swastika is an ancient symbol or something.
Obviously I don't want to throw them out but should I get someone from auction room to value them or take
them to the Caledonia Book Shop and see if they are interested?

You could start by looking them up online.

These are likely to be older editions of Rudyard Kipling's works - the swastika on the spine is an ancient Indian good luck symbol, widely used well before the Nazis notoriously adopted it for their own purposes. I have to tell you that they are unlikely to be worth very much. Take your aunt's books to Voltaire & Rousseau, Caledonia Books or Thistle Books and see what they have to say - but don't build up your hopes too much in terms of value.

Thanks, Viceroy.

Equally, any blue or red leather-bound copies of the classics from the turn of the 19th/20th century are liable to be newspaper freebies, the equivalent of DVD cover-mounts.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Was looking up a few things online last night and next time I am over will check out some more titles.

Pretty sure books I mentioned were by Rudyard Kipling and I will not build my hopes up regarding what they may
be worth. Just trying to help clear out a home and any money made would be going straight to my aunt.
She is elderly and just wouldn't want to see someone of her years ripped off.

Talking of Hitler I see that a rare signed copy of Mein Kampf sold for £21,000 recently in Shropshire.
Not expecting to find anything like that but it is interesting all the same.
