Have you ever seen anyone put under hypnosis to relive their life as Baldrick. No me neither.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Hi, Trollong through this series of replies I noted Viceroy asked does any other of James Smith's (Madeleine Smith's father) buildings exist. There does - the Victoria Baths, the Collegiate School. Overtoun House, the Stirling Library and the biggy the McLellan Galleries,

I'm sure there are more and I think he was the architect for the building diagonally across the street from the McLellan Galleries - called the Osborne Buildings (see my Osborne Buildings topic). Where the name "Osborne" came from I have no idea but there is an Osborne Street - maybe the name after the same guy?

Other buildings designed by James Smith, he also did others in partnerships

Ps. I know Rowallan (laterally Rhu ellen is no longer standing it was turned into a hotel which burnt down under suspicious circumstances in the 80's), the others in Rhu, shandon and Drymsynie and Dhuhill in Helensburgh are deffinately still standing.

Thanks for link - hadn't come across this one before. He was a busy architect. From reading the write-up it seems that to prove/disprove James Smith as the Osborne Bldg architect a trip to the NAS Register of Sasines un Edinburgh is in order,

Oh well of on another tangent.

Here is the link to the buildings search page for the same site. It doesn't find "osbourne buildings" and I did not know the address but you can look. Glad you found the previous link useful

I tried the building search & didn't find the 'Osborne Buildings' either - but found the 'McLellan Galleries' OK

I have the address from Historic Scotland - 269-305 Sauchiehall St.

http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/ind ... =0&start=1

I just got sent a scan (postcard c1940s) of Sauchiehall St and sender swears it is a veiw of the Osborne Bldgs - I'll have to try and attach or link it to see if anyone can confirm.

If you look at http://maps.live.com/ you can zoom in to the buildings and then choose "birds eye view", you might need to rotate, but you get a good view. S'hall st, north facing, between Pitt st & douglas St.

Did find the Osborne Buildings via the maps link OK- great views in 3D. It looks like shops etc on street level but tenements in the upper levels - going from the view of the back of the building.

Tried to "match" the 3D street map views east & west to the 1940s postcard scan I was sent but no luck - the roofs don't quite match in either direction. Suppose the roofs could have changed in 60 years!!!
