Words That Only Sound Right in Glaswegian!!

Postby Bonz » Wed May 26, 2004 11:59 am

Awright! (There's your first word)

Dunno if this has been done before, but following on from the fave chat up lines topic, does anybody have any favourite words/phrases that only sound right when uttered in finest Glaswegian!

Personal faves of mine include:

bawbag, minted, shitebag, brammer (as in oh ya brammer!), ya wee beauty etc etc etc.

Go on folks, there must be millions of quality Glaswegian words and phrases that just wouldn't sound right outside the central belt of Scotland.

Look forward to seeing all yer posts!

My favourites were always the phrases

"naw ye urny"

and often a response to the above...

"aye um ur"

Dobber

Fud

And, not in the homosexual sense, but in the sense of someone who's a bit of a dobber:

Poof (as demonstrated by McGlashan in "Absolutely")

There are also words that don't sound right if you're Glaswegian. There was a guy in my work called Karl and I cringed when I said it. It only sounded right in an English accent like his.

Nane of yer cheek or i'll hammer you ya mad rocket.

Oh, and I'll just mention the woman at my work that always used to say "Bite my banger". That sounds good in Glaswegian. Although strangely scary coming from her.... :?

What was her name, dude?
I've only ever really heard one person use that phrase - be weird if it was the same girl!

My wife still does. She's from Newmains and doesn't have a Glaswegian bone in her body.

She also uses the word "Een" instead of "eye" and pronounces "pillow as "Pilly". Oh, and pronounces "card" as "caird".

She's a nutter, but I love her.....
