Nice to hear other people's experiences of what it used to be like. What do people think of the present crop of gay venues in Glasgow? I don't think it's that great for such a big city 8O

Maybe that's because Glasgow gays prefer to have a decent pint in a decent bar without being ripped aff because of their sexuality. Or how many Gay venues should their be. Ten per cent of the current provision?

Shit.

Well, I've only really been to Polo, and only a handful of times, but aside from my pleasant surprise at finding that they have 80/- (albeit nitrokeg) on tap, I didn't care for it much. I tried to go to Delmonica's once, but was knocked back for 'not being a regular', and man was I annoyed to see the people with pierced ears and dyed hair getting through the door without a second look, while I stood out in the cold. Bennetts is apparently so bad that I've yet to meet a person who would admit to going.

I hear there are other places, but I have no knowledge of them. I don't by any means hang out exclusively with gay people, or even live with gay people, but I do know a handful, and not once have I heard someone suggesting to go somewhere other than Polo/Delmonica's.

Utter Gutter is a decent night, but it's expensive, and only once a month.

If gays don't want discriminated against, want to just be treated as part of the population why should they need seperate clubs and bars ?

I assume you're not gay. You therefore fall into 90-95% of the population.

I however, fall into a minority that is somewhere between 5-10% population. Since I've lived in Glasgow (only since September, but still), I can think, off the top of my head, of 2 gay people that I have randomly through my regular and academic life, that I would have met anyway had I been straight. If I want to meet other gay people, whether for socialising with, as a potential partner, and oh, why not be a little base about this, for a fuck, I have two options. One is the gay scene. The other is gaydar.co.uk. I don't like either much, but I dislike the Glasgow gay scene enough that I spend more time than as is healthy logged into gaydar. Otherwise I'd be moaning to my straight male flatmates about the fact that I never meet any gay people.

The other big reason is discrimination. Now, I've never encountered outright discrimination in my life to date (beyond not being allowed into Dels, hahah!), and that includes back when I had a boyfriend and felt happy enough to walk down the street holding his hand, or give him an affectionate but brief kiss goodbye in public. (And if your next line is "I don't mind gays, but why don't they just keep it to themselves?", you've just answered your first question. Bear in mind I'm not doing anything a straight couple would think twice about doing.) This isn't the case for everyone I know. A very attractive lesbian girl I used to work with told me about her experiences of going clubbing with her equally attractive girlfriend. Crowds of guys would gather round them and make obnoxious drunken remarks, along the lines "come on, give us a kiss, lezzers" etc. We're not talking about physical violence or anything, she says she simply feels more comfortable in gay bars and clubs.

I'm of the fuck-them school whenever I noticed somebody looking twice at me because I'm sitting close to a partner in a bar. I can understand why other people wouldn't feel the same, and prefer to be in an environment where nobody cares.

Well said Mac!
And yes, Elgee, we would love Utopia where no one ( gay or any other minority , sexual, religious or whatever) is discriminated against. But as we are , as Mac says, only 5-10% of the population, can we ,in all reality ,safely and comfortably count on the other 90-95% to NOT discriminate .

I first experienced Glagows gay life when I was 17. I was a young silly boy who made the mistake of going to dels. Being 28 now I know there is not much in they way of gay pubs. Its either dels, polo or bennets. For me I haad alot of hassle growing up in glasgow and when I moved to Dumfries things got worse ( small town ).

When I finally moved back to glasgow, I never frequented the so called gay bars.

I agree, the gay scene in Glasgow leaves a lot to be desired.

Elgee, gays clubs are not exclusive and straight people are welcome to show outward affection to each other without fear of hassle, or worse, as anyone who has ever been to a gay club will know. The opposite, in the vast majority of cases, cannot be said. Your proposition is the ideal, but far, far removed from reality.

Why not go the whole hog and open clubs/pubs for every minority group in Glasgow? And then have special parades down Argyle Street every year, just to tell everyone about their groups?
It's business , not personal.

Did you not read the replies to elgee's post? Did you just not understand them?

My initial reaction to comments like this is usually to be staggered that someone can be so crass.....then after a while I find that I'm almost glad they said them. Sometimes it's a useful reality check to realise that there are still people around with bigoted, outdated views and to remind oneself that perhaps we're not quite as far forward as we think.

I thought we did. Neds go to The Moon, gay neds go to Penelope's and gay neds with money go to delmonicas. It's called capitalism I think.
