Going back quite a way now, I rembember an old guy with a hand brush on the Bath St bridge over Queen St station that is next to the big glass roof, between N Hanover St and the Buchanan Galleries overpass.

He seemed to spend his life brushing the cast ironwork on the top of the bridge wall and just seemed to work his way from one end to the other day in a and day out.

I remember HiFi, I used to get her a bottle of bru and 10 snouts every Friday after work... the poor sod. She was found dead in the Clyde; suspected suicide although never investigated.

May she rest in peace.

Does anyone remember the chap who had red hair and beard (sometimes) He used to wander about Argyle st and the rest. He never asked for money even though he sometimes only had one shoe on.
I did give him money when I saw him….. He’s gone now

There is a good book called “A Tramp around Glasgow”.. .. Read it… get’s you thinking..........

The name I knew him by was Frank the Tramp or funnily enough Pet Shoe due to him only wearing one shoe and the other being kicked or him leading it by the shoelace. There's a rather tragic story of how Frank came to being in such destitute state but I'll leave that for the social historians. His obituary was in the Glasgow Herald IIRC maybe 10 or so years ago.

I wonder if it’s the same story I’ve heard Pgcc93? Or is it another urban myth?

Whats a professional begger when they are at home?
In yonder times beggers used to have to apply to the parish to beg, if they were deemed "worthy" they were given a badge so that the gentry as they walked down Sauchiehall Street could tell the beggers from the losers.......doesnt matter if they had a menta illness they didnt "look" like they were worthy.
What do we see on Sauchiehall Street now, still beggers with badges (Big Issues) , they are the worthy ones the ones trying to make a difference, everyone else is a scrounger .....ah yes!!! Doesnt quite ring true to me somehow, I give regardless.....
Hare Krishna people.........say something weird to em.....freal em out......when they say have you got 10 mins whisper in their ear "I just cut off my best friends legs and ate them" and walk off....thatll freak em out !!!

Those Greenpeace/shelter/ whatever people.....they get paid 10 bucks an hour to do that .......now if you sign up 10 a month......then that is paying them to stand there for like two days in ten months time......wanks.....I had a m8 that done it and yes they do have targets!!!!And they think they are doing something good.......do they realise that some of the companies dont even pay there staff what they are getting!!!

Asylum Seekers.......bring em on I say.....all the ones Ive met have been lovely people, unlike some of my neighbours who are arses.....in fact if my little close could be filled up with asylum seekers id be happy.....instead ive got crazy techno dude and nosey lady!!

Q.How do you confuse a Daily Express reader?
A. Tell em Asylum Seekers are the natural predators of Paedophiles

I remember the ginger haired and bearded tramp wandering around Glasgow in the early to mid 80's. Someone told me that he had seen his Wife and children burned to death in a house fire. They said he had been a successful business man and lost the plot. I think and certainly hope the story i was told about his plight was not true and just another urban myth.

There was an aisan tramp that wandered Anderston years back who we all christained "T-bag" (don't ask?).

He was a misserable old swine, but was good for a "chasey"!!

Unfortunatley he was found dead in a bin, his wee legs dangling out for all to see.

Sigh........we missed that smell of stale p**h.........

tramps in Glasgow

Thats intresting about the badges Aliferste and what you say about the Big issue vendors is true It has become a licence to beg.
The problem is you walk down Gorden Street or any other Glasgow street and people are asking for money. If you give a down and out £1 and tell them to buy something to eat, they dont, they buy drink or drugs. If you give it to the Charity worker less than half the money makes it back to the streets and then not even Glasgow streets.
That is the main problem, you are doing more harm by giving a £1 direct
its going straight up a vein or pissed against a wall.Charity is the answer,
look at the soup kitchen in George Sq at night soup ,food, comfort ,dare I say God.One of the Glasgow Missions last year had a great thing going
buy a book of meal vouchers and hand them out in the street. The person gets a hot meal a change of clothes and a bit of care, thats the most important thing... care!
Now that I know that the Charity sales are getting £10 an hour this all adds to the bad side of giving and will put people off giving. Please dont let that you stop giving to a good local cause that are bringing help and care to the streets of Glasgow, they know how to best spend the cash and make a lasting change to someones life.

I would rather go into a charity shop and spend a bit of cash on something than give to the "chuggers" (Charity Muggers)...
Too few hours in the day.

What I meant was I buy both the Big Issue and give to beggers on the street......some of them I know are living in local hostels......who cares if they spend it on drink and drugs, some of my friends spend a 100 bucks at the weekend on drink and drugs....if it is a crutch for them at this time in their lives then so be it. At some point im sure they will be trying to reciover from their problems!

A very valid point. I've always thought it a bit unfair not to give money to homeless on account of them "just wasting it on drink and drugs". Unlike the rest of us

One other controversial point - has anyone else notices how the tabbard wearing professional charity collectors are almost always from the south of England?
