What were the white boxes in the upper windows of Napier House for?

GCC

Demolition of Dangerous Building to Begin

Work will begin today (Friday July 29th) to demolish a snooker club in Victoria Road, Glasgow, which suffered a roof collapse yesterday evening.

Building control officers have taken the decision to demolish the building on safety grounds after a thorough assessment of the damage. They are currently awaiting the arrival of specialist machinery from Ayrshire which will bring the building down.
A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: “Safety is paramount. Residents evacuated from flats in front of The Q Club can not be allowed to return to their properties until the demolition is complete and their homes deemed safe.
“Victoria Road will also remain closed between Calder Street and Cuthbertson Street while the work takes place as will Kingarth Street between Victoria Road and Pollokshaws Road. Diversions are in place.”

I could be wrong but it looks like air conditioners - was there something on that top floor which needed a lot of cooling down?

They didn't look big enough for that - although maybe they were about the size of a gas boiler balanced flue?

They looked to be about 9" square, about the size of a small microwave link. I can't think why there would be four arranged like that, or what they'd link *to* - possibly something to do with the CCTV camera links like the ones around BAe Systems (those camera-sized boxes with a broad flat black front panel).

Ibrox Street (Cessnock end) today:

I'm told it started yesterday when a piece of masonry fell from the top floor. Then a giant cherry picker turned up (cue Jaws music).

A dreadful warning to do the damned maintenance........

Indeed. The luxuriant vegetation currently attached to some of Glasgow's buildings doesn't bode well....

To quote Helen D : "Planning Weed".

I'd be interested to see what percentage of GCC and GHA stock suffer from Planning Weed.

Excepting the GCC and GHA headquarters.

The weeds in GHA buildings mostly work in Granite House

Did you take the photo? It is fantastic!

Obviously not great for the poor person who lives there, or for the neighbours and more importantly anyone hit on the bonce by a bit of stone, but it is a brilliant picture for getting a look at the internal construction of a tenement. Makes them look a lot less substantial when you take a section out and expose it for what it is.

Cheers

Until now it hadn't crossed my mind to question how 'hanging' bay windows are supported. From the above it looks like a combination of luck and faith.

Yup, and thanks! (I didn't spot the sun glare till much much later, of course.

Today's update (of the final amputation yesterday):

Rather surprisingly, business as usual below.

And a closer look at the top (non)window:

Now, place your bets on how long it'll all stay like that...

Nice update - great to see the detail of the bay. I had thought after your first pic that the bay support was steel/iron but now it looks like a timber ring beam...

Very interesting. Keep them coming!

That may not be about neglect. Work has been being carried out down there for ages.

Whether it's been done well may be down to the contractor(s).
