Major explosion at plastics firm

Postby Sharon » Tue May 11, 2004 12:31 pm

A number of people are feared dead and others trapped in a huge explosion at a plastics factory in Glasgow.
About 60 people are also thought to have been injured in the blast which has demolished much of the Stockline Plastics building, in Grovepark Street, in the west end.

Sounds bad....

I heard a lot of sirens at lunchtime, and I saw loads of police going into minibuses at Pitt Street, thought something must have happened.

Thats right round the corner from my flat!

Got a text from a friend that lives next door to me; he said the walls of the building shook when it happened...

Just got back home after wandering past. Maryhill Road is closed from Napiershall St down; the police blockade is visible from my kitchen window. Clyde 1 have parked their news van right outside my flat.

The place is crawling with police and TV crews and vans and the like.

The BBC and ITV have both built themselves little podiums side by side to broadcast from - Jackie Bird and the bloke from Scottish News were there just about go go live from the site.

The place looks like a bomb site; Very scary stuff.

By strange coincidence this was a building I _almost_ took a photo of last weekend, as it had some interesting brickwork on the end wall.

Nope - a suitably sombre dark suit - as you can see in the pics!

I passed by the site today - it's really eerie. I think I counted 7 satellite trucks, plus two big radio vans and Radio Clyde's car. And apparently Sky News are paying someone £2000 to have a camera in their living room.

It all seems rather insensitive. Yesterday the news channels were all live all day. I've got the rather cynical suspicion that the only reason that the BBC spent so much time with blanket coverage on News 24 on Tuesday was because Sky News weren't there, because they couldn't get a satellite truck to Glasgow fast enough. And so they both had to stay there for most of yesterday..

The media coverage is being discussed here http://www.tvforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10175

This HG thread has had alot of hits from here which led me to see why!

The BBC are obviously in for the long haul - they've replaced the wooden ladder up to their wee podium with a nice proper staircase, so they're not in any rush to get away!

I also noticed quite a few cables disappearing into various flats along that road; some folk must be doing quite well out of this whole thing.
