Great set of pictures there Cyclo, I enjoyed going through them all. I'm a bit disappointed though, that there wasn't a single Scottish cyclist included in the set. The only cyclist I knew was Dave Bedwell, a great cyclist and known as the "Ironman". Glasgow's Alex Hendry and George Edwards both featured very strongly in the Brighton to Glasgow races and both performed well. I still have the programme for the 1946 Brighton to Glasgow race and in it there is a picture of Alex Hendry and a couple of other cyclists (Ernie Clements is one of them) leaving Buckingham palace with a message for the Lord Provest of Glasgow. In the '46 event our club gathered on the hills above Stewarton and cheered George Edawards on his solo breakaway over the last few miles into Glasgow, and the big fellow was thumping up the hills and going like a train...a great finish!

It was great talking to "yin o' the aulyins" in the Glens Bar in New Cumnock who told us about the Flying Scot he used to have which he rode down and back to Blackpool all those years back.

Thon Scot...
The lugs would be Nervex Professional - later bikes could be Prugnat.
The tubing could be Accles and Pollack or Reynolds 531.

GORDON CASELY wrote this obituary

Bill Ritchie

Cartoonist and cycle speedway internationalist;

Born: August1, 1931
Died January 25, 2010.

BILL Ritchie, who has died aged 78, was the cartoonist whose work amused two generations of readers of comics from the stable of DC Thomson. Cartoon characters such as Baby Crockett and Clumsy Claude were originated by Ritchie, and the strips carrying their adventures that made them famous to readers of the Beezer and the Beano.

It was in the rough-and-tumble post-war sport of cycle speedway however that Glasgow-born Ritchie, a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, first made his name. He proved a top performer, competing in the first cycle speedway international against England in May 1949, at Rayleigh, Essex.

What a complete waste of money. You could have got 23 yards, 2 feet and 1.5 inches more of the M8 extension for that.
