By which I mean owned by the same family / group etc as opposed to say a pub being run operated the same site.

John Smith & Son? Just a guess as it was continuously owned by the same mob, more or less.

Agree with brickwall, JS&S will be hard to beat with a birth year of 1751!!!

There must be something out there that is older. After all, Aberdeen Harbour Company is britains oldest; incorporated in 1136.

It is not John Smith & Son as they actually no longer exist - the board sold out many years ago and the publishing arm only use the name in their University Bookshops. I can't remember who bought them out but they are no longer!

Apart from Merchants House, Trades House, etc - I think the answers will come flowing soon enough but its one of those, (Jings I remember such and such and the minute you ask me) kind of questions and I am struggling to think of what is the oldest company, corporation, club and individual business in Glasgow.
"Listen, it's too big a world to be in competition with everyone. The only person who I have to be better than is myself. And in your case, that's enough."
