Am I alone in finding this man rather sinister?

"Would you like to buy some pegs Dave?"

(Fantastic post BTW, Kenny. Cheers!)

This isn't actually from a guide but from a wee book I've just bought on ebay about the subway. I'd never seen this picture of St Enoch's before. It doesn't really fit in the threads about the subway so I put it here!

Am I right in thinking that this is still on the Green, at the Saltmarket end?

I'd often wondered, but never enough to find out, what it was.

Nice pic. Is that from the "I Belong to Glasgow" book duck ?
Is it a painting, or hand coloured photo ?

Yes, it's from I belong to Glasgow Kenny. It says on the inside page that it's " St Enoch Station in District Subway days as portrayed by A.P.Thomson, R.S.W "
I thought it was a smashing painting and would love to have/see a full size, original or copy!

It's a shame to see that Clyde Street (am I right in thinking that?), clearly once a central focus of the city enough to be featured on the front page of a guide book, has become such a nonentity now full of bookies and dodgy furniture shops:(

Just found this one in a box of my Dad's old books and papers my sister recently delivered to me. No doubt I'll find lots more "treasure"!!

I can't find a date but I think it's late 50's as it talks of British Railways and mentions " at the moment the Corporation Transport Department is engaged in replacing the electric tram car service by buses and trolley buses".

Not exactly a guide but the City of Glasgow pictorial map! No date but lots of clues -
1. the post code is still C2
2. Edwin J Hirst is the Information officer
3. Telephone number is CENtral 7371
Just thought it fitted in!
