What's the story with this? It's a nice building and in a pretty prime location so why has it been empty for so long?

When I was passing one time I noticed that they seem to have plonked a staircase inside in a weird place which has possibly ruined part of the original features..except I can't quite remember what right now, as I've been meaning to post this for ages!

Don't know what the story is, Simba, but couldn't resist the opportunity to say that I once went to a Christmas party there - turkey, Santa, the lot. In July.

There was a plan to convert it into an asylum seekers hostel

Dunno why it didn't happen. Local objections, perhaps.

Who could resist the opportunity? ::):

But I think it was a demo by an event organisation company. Book us, and this is what your staff Christmas night out will be like.

I think what it was, was that you could see the stairs through the windows and it seemed like they weren't in the original plan for the building. Maybe I'm wrong though.

When did it close? Was it a 'posh' hotel?

I can't offhand remember when it closed but I can tell you that it was never a 'posh' hotel.

Word on the grapevine (my clique of sources) is that it is to be redeveloped for housing!

All I remember is seeing tacky luminous "SINGLES NIGHT AT THE LORNE HOTEL" posters all over the west end every week of the year. Whenever I passed it I'd have a wee smirk to myself at all the singletons who'd gone there with the promise of as much Manto as you could shake a stick at!

It was well known as a cheap joint for picking up hookers.

The Lorne Hotel was the subject of a planning application recently.

If my memory is correct it was for housing. It was bought over and the owner did intend to keep the hotel going but I think the market for it was poor and it closed just a couple of years ago.

I attended a wedding reception here not long before it closed.

It will be possible to find out from the planning department details of the application.

I was visiting relatives and the topic of the wedding reception came up. According to the conversation the rooms were ok. From memory of the reception the facilities were very good and the drink reasonably priced.

It still shows up on the cheap hotel websites, although obviously you can't book
