Its such a cool thing and one of the only things in that bit of the Clyde that shows boats did use the river. Would be a shame to see it knocked down for flats or offices.

Dave.

As for it's future word on the street is that it'll be re-housed at the new museum of transport but We'll have to wait and see.

I have it on good authority that Historic Scotland dismantled the crane and power supply and shipped it to Edinburgh for storage to be rebuilt god knows where and when!.
I have fond memories from around 93 of dangling underneath it in a speedboat while being launched into the clyde.
The electrical power supply for the crane came from a small brick building which remained after the sheds were demolished. I looked like a extract from a frankenstein film with open gate switches and amazingly "mercury vapour rectifiers" wiki it to see what i mean!.
I was also told that the glass spheres were smashed when moving the crane to storage and therefore this part of history is gone forever!

Mercury vapour rectifiers ... it's been a fair few years since I've heard of one of those.

This crane was saved by the Clyde Heritage Trust - it was going to be scrapped, but they managed to rescue it and it's in storage at the moment. The plan is to create a museum of industry, science and technology in the old Howden's works on Scotland Street, and the crane will go there.
