Immaterial. The picture in high resolution was compared to an aerial photograph from the early 60's and every chimney stack matched including the lengths and colour of individual chimney pots. Part of the zebra crossing was also visible in the aerial photo. The style of the tenements on both sides of the road were identical in both photos. The location was proved beyond any doubt.

You're looking the wrong way.

Postby red_kola » Tue Jan 01, 2008 9:42 pm

The photo is heading into town (south east) therefore both Bisland drive and Kelvindale Avenue would be behind the vantage point, to the left and right respectively. As Dexter suggests, and painful as it might be, read the whole thread - or at least from page 22 onwards...

I did read the complete thread and i'm very well aware that the photo suggests the road is heading towards the town. I lived in Dalmally Street and went to Dunard Street School and l am fimiliar with the area. The shop listings start at Munns which would be out of view around the bend on the left of the photo, and the opposite side of the street (right of photo) were the shops listed start from Braeside Street back to Kelvindale Ave which l am fully aware would be to the back of where the photo was taken from. Just for you l have extended the range of shops from Dunard Street to Kelvindale Ave.

Thanks. What I am unable to tell from your post is whether you are still in doubt as to the location of the photograph.

At the lower left of the photo (left of the white Luton van) it looks like it might be a church ground next to the gable end of the building. It appears to have a low level wall and a fairly well developed tree in the garden. It also has what appears to be a notice board similar to other churches that lets you know the name of the church etc. Anyone else thinks this could be a church? Could well be im the only one thats not convinced this is Maryhill Road.

I think that it is still inconclusive that it is Maryhill Road. Certainly the case put forward for it so far is the strongest yet, but not necessarily conclusive. If we could get a similar photograph showing that it was Maryhill Road, then it would settle matters for once and for all.

OK, I’m almost convinced its Maryhill Road. Having checked the OS map, the photo and my own documents over and over l find that if the pub on the right hand corner is at Kelvinside Ave and Maryhill Road the Kelvinside Vaults (J. T. Wharry spirit dealer) at no 757 then the shops next to it would have been no 763 Arthurs, butchers then at no 765 J. Hughes, electrical dealer. A number of other shops are listed on this stretch of Maryhill Road in 1971 but l know that there was some demolition work in the area in 1974 as l have a photograph which shows part of Kirkland Street demolished. This would account for the OS map showing the land between no 777 and 795 being empty. The Strathmore Public House (J. McAdam, spirit dealer) on the corner of Rolland Street is still shown but would be to the rear of the photographer. The land l initially thought was a church with the notice board could be the sign for Nan & Bill McNaught, ladies hairdresser at no 822 as the OS map shows the shop to be within an unmarked area.

This is probably the best HG thread ever.

You're right and I'm getting helluva close here to booting up the old PC and digging it all out again if these doubters persist!
