What's this wall?

Postby crusty_bint » Mon May 03, 2004 3:28 am

Does anyone know what this old section of wall belonged to? It sits rather oddly amongst modern flats and the Central College of Commerce?

(There's always folk up there in the afternoon trying to fly kites, anyone know what thats all about while I'm at it???)

I live in Townhead, not far from that location. I'm not entirely sure what
that was, but I'm fairly sure there was once a school or maybe a church
building in that area. I might be wrong, as I've never seen a building there
in my lifetime (I've only lived in Townhead for 10 years). The picture
below is an edited version of one someone posted around here the other
day. It shows the flats next to the wall under construction, but nothing at
the actual sight of the wall.

Further thought: the film Heavenly Pursuits, starring Tom Conti and Helen
Mirren, seems to have been filmed in that area. Conti's character was a
school teacher, and the school *seemed* to be in that precise area, as the
College of Food & Technology building (top left in the picture below) is
visible in the background in several outdoor shots. I believe the film was
made aroung 1985/86.

Not a clue. I've actually never noticed that before. :D

On the subject of walls in that area, has anyone been in to see the remaining grain store walls in the north-east corner of the large Queen St station car park? The store could be accessed from both Cathedral St and North Hanover St.

That whole car park and the taxi rank off North Hanover St was originally a goods yard with a weighing station right where the taxis turn in off North Hanover St. The original goods yard wall runs down North Hanover St to this turning.

If you go into the car park you'll see where the wagons would pass through the walls of the grain store, being turned by a turntable before rejoining the main line at the Queen St tunnel.

With most of the grain store gone, large supports are now needed to hold up the remaining wall.

That's the very grain store with the goods yard wall running down North Hanover St. Funny to see it from that angle.

I believe the original Queen St Low Level building was against that wall
also. The impressions of the doorways and windows remain on the North
Hanover St side.

Yes! It probably the architecture students from Strathcylde Uni, one of the more creative projects in first year is to design build and fly a kite. Don't ask me why! I alway remember my pitiful effort never getting off the ground, whilst the Malaysian students had built the most amazing things that soared all over the place.
