Taken whilst driving over the Sauchiehall Street Bridge at Newton Street at speed from my mobile with a Fire Engine up my arse.

The place kind of blew up. I hope everyone got out in time.

At one point the flames were pretty close to the Mitchell.

Back home again but looking down towards Kent Rd/ North St there seems to be a lot of smoke rising which hasn't been there for the last few hours.

It was some fire, i passed on the M8 on the way home from the football in one of the buses in socceroo's pic at the height of the fire, it caused quite a bit of delay on the motorway with everyone slowing down for a look.

The whole place was alight from floor level up, I wasn't surprised to come on here to find out it was ready to be demolished anyway

it nearly was mate, she nearly crashed the fucking motor, too busy trying to win an argument with me, which is no easy task at the best of times, i was giving her serious pelters though, imagine nearly crashing into the back of a parked car with hazards on and a beacon on the roof

Fire started in the vents above a clay oven (most kitchens get these vents cleaned at least once a year.

And the thing that put a little smile on my sullen monday morning face. The owner was also the owner of Creme De La Creme? Shut for refurb then for whatever reason, had to be knocked down. And now the site for new luxury apartments.

There weren't any problems with planning permission and there were five staff in the building at the time.

How many commercial buildings in Glasgow go on fire and get completely destroyed when they are in normal use and not under any planning application etc. About zero per year.

I am sure one of you will correct me if I am wrong but isn't there a big VAT advantage to doing a new build as opposed to a refurbishment?

Not sure about VAT relief John, but it was to be demolished and a new building in its place so would have probably been classed as a new build anyway.

McShad: The filters above the ovens should be cleaned daily and the ducts should be cleaned at least annually but it is an expensive job (approx £1000 a time) so they possibly took a chance since the place was closing down at the end of the year. The filters are also part of the systems that help prevevent the spread of fire and if they are removed for cleaning while the ovens are in use the grease coating the ducts can catch light very easily.
