On a follow-up to the theme: I fancied an evening course (sorry, lifelong learning course :) ) listed at Central College in Glasgow.

I logged onto their website to get details. Sure enough there was a button to click for information on courses. But when you click what you get is a pro-forma to email a request for them to post out a copy to you. Hmm I thinks, not heard of online prospectus or even a facility to download a copy from your website?

Anyhows I emailed off the request and got an almost instant acknowledgement... so here I am over two weeks later and no prospectus.

Thank you Central College, that tells me what I need to know

By the way if anyones interested in some serious heavy stuff on Higher/Further Education colleges, see Scottish Executive current paper:

You are going to see a lot more colleges shut/boarded up with the governements plans for mergers for colleges.

That would of course be the Scottish government. Ayr roll on independence.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

I don't know that many actual college buildings, save some outposts away from the main campuses will actually close but I expect Mike Russell will attempt to decimate academic and administration staff numbers.

By 'decimate' you presumably mean a 10% cut? Because otherwise I'm going to get very upset. Misuse of that particular word is one of my bugbears.

I don't know about that.
Estates are definitely one of his targets.
The original Glasgow City College merger certainly did not mean they would keep all three campuses and two of them are in prime city centre locations.
Backoffice functions are also a target, but where each college is in effect a single chartible institution with its own wage structure it will take many years for mergers to effect assimilation in TCS. It may see a return to collective barganing and national wage TCS for college staff.
It will cut choice for students, with variation in courses or duplication being cut. In practical terms you may like a college or live near it but only one college in each region will provide certain courses and that might not be the one that suits you.

The Scottish Government (SG) it could be argued is forced into these situation by the cut in the block grant coming from Westminster.
The Public Sector pension contributions are a case in point.
SG have made it very clear they don't want to implement those increases, but the UK gov have said don't do it and we will remove 8 million from your block grant.
