Guillemots in Glasgow

Postby Pripyat » Tue Sep 19, 2006 9:49 am

Looks like their moving up the Clyde, in search of grub. Not that
keen on old kebabs and pizza. Get down to the local supermarket
and get the cans of tuna and sardines at the ready.

And for those that might confuse them with seagulls, here's what
to look out for

Spotted one of those bad boys on the Clyde a couple of days ago, near the Squinty Bridge.

:D Saw one today.

Fishing below Finnieston Bridge.

Though it could have been a cormorant. Anyone know how to tell the difference when you can only see one of them?

You see Cormorants quite a lot on the Kelvin.

As for the difference between a cormorant and a guillemot, a guillemot is smaller, has large white patches and it's black feathers are 'dull'.

A cormorant is quite a bit bigger, is mostly black and it's black feathers have a greeny sheen, kind of like those on a magpies tail.

Ah.

It was a shag I saw. Unless it was the cormorant I can't tell it from. :?

Is Finnieston Bridge the Squinty Bridge or one of the others?

I guess calling it the Clyde Arch would be clearer but somehow -
- I just can't... :(

Yes, the newest one.

Loads of cormorants along the Clyde around Dalmarnock bridge. Trees full of them like something out of The Birds. Couple of herons, loads of ducky things (the technical term).
