Monklands Hospital in Airdrie uses a pneumatic tube system throughout the hospital. It was fitted about 3 years ago and is used for some paperwork and the transportation of specimens, blood samples etc. Its VG by the by. Ill try to find out how it works, but there is one unit in each area, with 2 tubes, one for in and one for out, so I dont think theres a suck and blow function.. And yes, you can get your hand caught in it if you are stupid enough (abd I shold know).

I liked the tube system in the film 'Brazil', that had real character.

They had them in B&Q in Darnley last time I was there (which was quite a long time ago...)

asda in govan installed them as part of their modernization, ive seen b&q use them as did homebase and when i was at gartnavel hospital today i noticed they use them also, granted the pod was like a neuclear warhead probably for transferring files and such the woman who was trying to operate it was on the phone moaning that it was buggered again

Another reference to them here, with some details on how they worked:

http://www.ids.u-net.com/cash/pneumatictube.htm

Some interesting archive shots of equipment at various stages, including the cash desks where they money ended up, if you click on the links on that page.

Interestingly, the references section of that site also has some Glasgow mentions:

MOSS, Michael and TURTON, Alison. A legend of retailing: House of Fraser. London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1989
• p.58, "The first Scottish cash-carrying system was installed in Glasgow at Arnott & Co's Jamaica Street warehouse in 1885. Walter Wilson swiftly copied the idea, installing a cash railway in his Colosseum warehouse in the same year."
• p.84, Pettigrew & Stephens opened in 1901 and had a pneumatic tube system.

The recently-rebuilt Bearsden Asda has them.

The piece of technology in shops that fascinated me when I was a kid was the row of Nixie Tubes used to form the readout of electronic cash registers and scales. The Nixie Tube consisted of a glass tube like an electronic valve, and had a series of fine mesh electrodes each displaying a number from 0..9.

Anyone else remember these?

They are still used by most supermarkets to move cash. Known as sending "Flights"
"I've seen them come and I've seen them go. And I've seen them Die"

Is this the same technology as the

pneumatic post of Paris?

I couldn't believe it when I first read about this. It's the most exciting thing ever!

sono that's another interesting line on the tubes. I don't myself know of the technology being used in this way for UK post, but perhaps someone on HG does know of an example? There are references in some of the sources from earlier in the thread to tubes being laid underground between individual buildings.
