Glasgow from the air

Postby Ronnie » Mon Apr 26, 2004 10:57 am

Glasgow doesn't look quite like itself from the passenger seat of a Bell Jetranger. Here are some photographs of the Clyde taken from that very place ...

(I now realise the error of my ways trying to post a photograph yesterday - I was using a Mac. Whoops, sorry, won't do it again.)

Oi, what's wrong with Macs? :)

When abouts were those photos taken? The docks at Pacific Quay are entirely grassed over, so presumably sometime between the Garden Festival and the Science Centre being built.

Hi Martin. I *love* Macs. I was making an ironic comment that the technology behind HG doesn't seem to be all that Mac-friendly. While I appeared to be blaming my Mac, I was in fact blaming the HG back end.

Yes, these were taken a few years ago. I can't recall exactly, but you'll notice the Armadillo is half finished. So it was roughly a year before the Armadillo opened ... any takers for that date?

Another clue might be the presence of the Tuxedo Princess ...

You're in the wrong thread, mate. The competition to find a new name for Crusty Bint is over there, behind the piano

You could be right about the date. The chopper lives on the Clyde, between the SECC car park and the Glenlee. When it's not at my disposal, the Radio Clyde/ Irn Bru/ Arnold Clark Eye in the Sky people get to fly it.

When I took my trip, the pilot was ... wait for it ... Captain Kidd ::):

I'm sure the chopper's still there - but it's not used for traffic reports anymore. Radio Clyde now use a wee Cessna based out of Glasgow Airport.

Excellent pics Rondo!!!!!!! :D thats the kind of thing I was going for on the "moving Picture" thread (albeit on a much less grand scale  )

I reckon your pics are earlier than 1999, take a look at this pic. On the Broomielaw you can see Atlantic Quay at York St but no Alexander Bain House (the big shiny BT buildig) which opened in May of 1998 and probably took about 18 months to complete

Thanks for all the comments. In other pictures (should I scan and post the whole roll of film?) you can see the start of construction of Buchanan Galleries, which might help date them. Or I could walk to the other end of the house and go through all my old diaries and find the Saturday morning Tom (the pilot) took me aloft. Not now, though.

OK. I'll find the diary and the date. A small prize for the closest guess.
