Anybody want a swatch up the fire escape at Partick?

Inner Circle escalators are closed so you have to go onto the outer, along the platform, through the fire doors, over the tracks then down again!

Dog knows what this'll cost.

One of the joys of the underground is the lack of cellphone coverage.

Awwww naw. And its going to happen in London as well. Bad enough fighting to get a seat or hanging off a grab rail standing with your nose in someones armpit without having to listen to half of an inane shite conversation as well.

Can you still buy those wee gadgets that cut off any mobiles near you when you press the button? I need to get one of those...

The best bit is wifi...in the subway... Ok, so aside for m there not being much room to get your laptop out, the longest possible journey is about 24 minutes, with most being about 8-10 I guess. At last in London you could be on for a good hour and thus have time to actually get something done.

Of course wifi is easier than changing the opening hours, persuading staff to work earlier / later , cleaning the stations, or sorting out the fact that several tunnels are used as storm drains.

According to Arquiva (who are supplying the technology) "The new network will enable customers to use the Internet and mobile phones when at these stations, and provide public access to WiFi services. " (my bold)

It says nothing about connectivity on the trains.

Hmmm one could argue there is even less need for it then. The longest wait is normally 8 minutes, and on a platform there is nothing to rest a laptop on, so it will really only help the minority with 3G or wifi phones.

The Tyne & Wear metro in Newcastle introduced a system to allow phone calls in its deep underground stations as part of the technology testing, but they had it throughout the tunnels, which made more sense as the system goes from above ground rail through tunnels under the city and out the other side, and this allowed conversations to be carried through that area.

I still don't think it should hav been SPT's highest spending priority!

Aaah! I'd wondered how I could still talk to my dad when I'm in Newcastle Central Metro, arranging for him to pick me up. Obviously I didn't wonder for long enough!

O2 used Newcastle as the proving ground for the technology then introduced into the London (it was some kind of deal where O2 did the technological stuff but all companies could use the transmitter when it was in place....I guess it saves having 6 or 7 underground transmitters)
