Anyone fancy a wee trip up there to see the caves, the lifts and generally hunt for Druids? Next weekend?

But, I probably can't do next weekend the 29th / 30th the one after however... saturday the 5th or.... this weekend!!!

I can also verify the caves up the back of Craigmaddie. There is a guy who lives in a cave up there - he is a bit odd, as you can imagine. I am sure there is or was a guy who lived in a tee pee up there too (altho might have been the same guy's summer house).

She also remembers there being ruins of a building she was told were a castle up behind the house - perhaps this is the temple? There is also an ice house up in the woods too (not to mention a gamekeeper with a gun, so if you are going wandering, be careful!)

yeah the teepee was just above the caves, so i guess it must have been the same guy. it was a beast of a tent though! not your avaerage traveller anyway!!
we found the ice house once, but i'll be f*cked if i can remember where.

If my memory serves me correctly, the buildings where the paintings etc were hidden were not too far from the house, and not too far from the wee road that goes thru the woods.

As for the ice house, well, I would imagine it wasn't too far from the house either, but I never saw it myself. If anyone is interested in seeing that, I can ask for some vague directions.

Alternatively, you could always approach the folks at the house - the Struthers - they might help you?

Antiquaries have a different method of accounting for the origin of the "Auld Wives’ Lifts," although even they have their differences of opinion on the subject. By some this gigantic cromlech is supposed to be a Druidical altar, whereon, in a dim prehistoric era, the dark rites of pagan worship may have been celebrated. In support of this theory it is stated that, until a comparatively recent period, the remains of an encircling grove of oak trees were visible on the surrounding heights, which, from their gentle ascending slopes, also seem peculiarly adapted for the accommodation of worshipping crowds, who might assemble to witness the sacrifice of human victims whose blood was shed at the rude shrine of Moloch.
