I was Broadsheet Convenor from 1985-1986 and on the ents crew so have a few (!) memories of the union from my time there (1982-1986). I may have copies of the broadsheets from that time and I think I have my diaries too. I have got the board photo but I assume you have that already?

My favourite memory of the QMU was seeing Steven Lironi's 'blink and you'll miss them' band Flesh (somewhere about 82-84). As the story at the time went, they had been signed by a major label the week before as a Funky/Disco-y band (of the kind popular in Glasgow at the time), with a couple of very pretty female singers and a couple more as back up vocalists. All the A&R men from the record company were up to see their new signing.

Steven and the other guitarist (Keith Band?) proceeded to turn up by themselves, stripped to the waist with 'Fuck' painted across their chests in red letters, turn on a beatbox and play very loud random chords for twenty minutes. The management turned the lights off after five minutes; they kept on playing. Eventually someone found the appropriate switch and cut their power.

It was great!

November 30th The Robert Cray Band/Kick Reaction

November 30th The Robert Cray Band/Kick Reaction

This was combined with a cut price Fustenberg promotion so succesful that even the black lager was being downed afterr the pilsner ran out. The crowd consisted of every Glasgow musician who'd ever played a blues lick. Unfortunately very few picked up what was great about the Robert Cary band. an up front , swaggering presentation backed up with great playing. An emphasis on good short songs without overamped and too long guitar solos and a sense of fun.

In traditional blues style his band played a vamp before introducing along teh lines "He's young, he's good looking and he plays the blues. He's Robert Cray."

Well thanks to this site I've managed to get a bunch of stuff about the QM, the most exciting being the 1984 handbook.
So if any of you have anything else you could offer, then please email me

Thanks again
