End of an era as 1920s pool set to be demolished

A SWIMMING pool and steamie which once formed the heart of a Glasgow community are being demolished to make way for flats.
The Whiteinch Baths, built in the 1920s, are to be pulled down after being boarded up for years. Dundas Estates and Development bought the building on Medwyn Street from Glasgow City Council around five years ago for an undisclosed fee. The pool closed in the mid-90s when Scotstoun Leisure Centre opened. Bosses now plan to demolish the swimming pool and steamie and build 35 flats on the site. They will retain a central B-listed pavilion but the pool on the west wing of the building and the laundry on the east, will be demolished before new development work begins. It marks the end of an era for thousands of people who remember flocking to the swimming pool every week. Paul Higgins, a 38-year-old animator from Partick, learned to swim at the pool. He said: "The building was once the heart of a community where local kids learned to swim, while women chewed the fat doing the washing at the steamie. "I was nearly greetin' when I heard it was going to be demolished. I have great memories of the place." The ancient baths were bought by the former Glasgow Corporation for £67,000. They once housed two swimming pools, 16 baths for women, 31 for men and a Turkish bath. The adjoining steamie was once the social heart of the community for women from Whiteinch and Scotstoun. It provided 43 washing stalls, 16 washing machines and racks.
After demolition Dundas Estates and Development will begin creating 35 one, two and three-bedroom flats. The central pavilion will be retained and will house seven flats.
How long before Govanhill's baths get into a state of sufficient neglect before they "have" to be pulled down for public safety. Listen, oh supposedly wise and omnipotent Glasgow Council, we don't all want flumes, waves, wains dashing about, some of us just want to swim and exercise.
