Just looking at the area on Windows Live Local - I wonder if they could raise
the M74 up to allow the line to pass under? I dont know the area at all, so I
don't know if this is impossible or not?

Had a quick rear through the Parkhead Station topic. Maybe this discussion should be moved to there.

I know that when the Forge was being built the developer set aside a sum of money for a station at Parkhead. It was always felt that this should be on the Airdrie line. Now that SPT have announced this as part of their capital programme hopefully it won't take too long before a station is opened.

The Springfield Road station would not, as I understand it, to be the termination point. They were examining the possibility of extending the line outside Glasgow. Whifflet may have been the destination but I can't remember. For some reason I have Newton stuck in my mind.

I agree Alycidon Crossrail needs to be the priority. But hopefully a station at Parkhead on the Airdrie line will not take finances away from Crossrail. I think the Scottish Executive are almost there on this.

Think the M74 is high enough up for the line to be bridged, but there may be othr obstacles.

Looking at Google Earth and Windows Live Local and you can see a lot of
new housing on the route of the line through Tollcross.

Funny you mention Newton - looking through old railway threads on this
forum and I saw mention by SPT of reopening the Carmyle to Newton chord. This
junction was immediately east of the current Carmyle station, and it was possible
to come along from Tollcross and end up in Newton. Interesting...

This photo has been on here before, but it's interesting in that it shows a little of the opening above the station.
