And members of 'Friends of the Glasgow Museums' (me).

Being a work day, I suppose the other younger members, couldn't get time off.

I was in on Monday, it was GCC teacher's day. I'll need to get my photo's off the camera and get them posted.

The Dali is looking magnificent in its rightful place.

I also noticed a few items have been moved from GoMA to Kelvingrove including 'Windows in the West'

Nice section on Glasgow's past and the International Exhibitions.

I agree about the Spitfire looking out of place

Great photos Alan. Did you also think the Egyptian room is a bit sparce ? That used to be one of my favorites.

The Spitfire is bugging me even more, it would be perfect in the Transport Museum, they are badly lacking any aviation exhibits in there.
I never looked at any of the caption cards, but if that's an example I can see viceroy's point about them being condescending. I'd prefer something a bit more in-depth :?

The caption cards are intended as a starting point with the study room being the place to find more in depth information. We didn't really have time to have a proper nosy around in there and the IT stuff is still to be installed.

Some of the cards were more informative than others. The photo of the Spitfire card was just of a small section (around a quarter of the card) The rest was made up of photos etc.

The Egyptian stuff was a little thin on the ground, but the Burrell is THE place to go for Egyptian artefacts.

Must confess I didn't spend a large amount of time there either yesterday as it wasn't a preplanned visit and I had somewhere else to go to. So the impressions I posted were fairly cursory. Very much looking forward to exploring the place in depth sometime next week when it's officially open [although I imagine it will be mobbed].

Kelvingrove Preview

Postby Gallowgate Gal » Wed Jul 05, 2006 12:36 pm

I went to the preview of Kelvingrove on Monday afternoon after receiving a ticket through work. I noticed however that no one asked for the ticket which miffed me slightly as I know lots of people who could have gone along and enjoyed it!!

I was concerned when I heard that Kelvingrove was being rennovated as I thought it might end up a modern monstrosity with partitions everywhere. Kelvingrove has been a part of my life since I was at school over 30 years ago. I needn't have worried as the transformation is amazing and in keeping with the design of the building. The exhibits are also displayed in a much better manner - more accessible. The whole building has a bright modern feel!

Great pics Ken, cheers for sharing :)

Here are some pics I got on a site visit in December '04, not long after the place was stormed by protesters protesting about the floorboards. Apologies for the quality of a lot of them, PlasticDel, did yours turn out any better?

Brilliant pics, nice to see it all in progress :)

Floorboards protest ?????? I didn't hear about that.
Are the wooden floors original ? I didn't like them much yesterday, I don't know what they've done, but they look like something out of B&Q, very red in colour, and cheapish looking.

You need to upload to somewhere like photobucket, ot tinypic.com, and then link to your post with the IMG tabs. This thread has info on photo hosting, it should help

I've no recollection of a spiral staircase and I've been going to Kelvingrove since the 1950's. I do remember that there was a tearoom at one time, on the upper floor. Can't remember its exact location but I think it was somewhere behind the organ where the silverware exhibits used to be [and where the beehive was many years ago]. But a spiral staircase? No. I don't remember that at all.
