He mentioned a scrapyard in Yoker, and I'm kind of assuming it's near the railway line, cos he took pics on his way into work.

Not really. The director chose Glasgow for its bleak, post-apocalyptic look.

It's Scarlett Johansson, and the film is called 'Under the Skin'.

Halle Berry was in Cloud Atlas, another film which was partially filmed in Glasgow.

Which director would that be Dazza? Run down grandeur is a slightly better description.

Instresting wee fact about "under the skin" most of the scenes are totally improvised, with the people not knowing they where being filmed until afterwards. To give it a sense or realism. Most didnt know it was Scarlet Johanssen until she told people after the shots were done, Incidently, she loved Glasgow and is renting a flat off byres road on long term lease. She liked it here because folk just left her alone and she could walk up the street unhindered.
A pal of mine worked on it and said it was a really different way of filming. I havent seen it yet, but my friend said its a Marmite film.

I can see your friend's point of view DH. I really enjoyed it but I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone else.
The Glasgow background is a bonus, and now finding out that a lot of the interaction between SJ and the men was improv makes sense. I thought at the time that the scene in the Buchanan Gallery had to be a hidden cam as everyone was reacting too naturally for a mass crowd scene.

Absolutely right, I loved it too, but can see why folk would hate it.

Glasgow is a kind of star in the film to be honest and I thought it came out quite well, even though a lot of the scenes are of rough areas and football crowds and pished folk staggering along Sauchiehall Street. Has the same vibe as Death Watch in times, and someone has likened the really very lengthy shots of Glasgow people just going about their business to the shots of New York in Taxi Driver. Doesn't glam the place up but does make it look, well, interesting.

Never thought I'd see the day where I'd be watching Scarlett Johansson on-screen discussing the way to the M8 via the Asda Govan...!

Both.

It had a society starkly divided amongst 'haves' and 'have nots'. The 'have' scenes were filmed in the West End (Park Circus, maybe?) and the 'have not' ones in the rubble of the wholesale tenemental destruction (and also the Graving Docks?).

Apologies for the 'maybe?'s. It's a while since I saw it last. Probably at the World Preview showing of the restored version at the GFT. For which read 'only showing', probably. Much like the World Preview of Richard Jobson's Glasgow kung fu film at the same place.

I recall quite enjoying that. Anyone got a better memory than me, and can remember what it was called? Featured the two brothers that used to run the gym at the corner of Renfrew Street and Cambridge Street.
