I'd regarded it as the book that almost everyone here would have but few would admit to owning.

What about an architecture book highlighting designs which were turned-down or rejected pipe-dreams.

Have you read a book called 'The City that Disappeared' showing buldings, mansions etc which are long gone?

The city that Disappeared by Frank Worsdale is a great book and if your lucky enough to see a second hand copy snap it up.

You can get it on Amazon just now for £40. Do you reckon it is worth trying to get it cheaper elsewhere?

At that price it's probably worth a wee trip to Wigtown.

I always have bad luck with overpaying for books, but I picked up a copy for just a few pounds. When I move into my flat and get my scanner plugged in I will post some pics. It has all these mansions at Possil, Easterhouse and Castlemilk. Do you think that is why housing developments get called estates?

I've just been having a quick look at a new book by Carol Foreman, "Glasgow from the Air - 75 Years of Aerial Photography."
It's from the RCAHMS archives and has some marvellous views over St. George's Cross among other places.
Highly recommended for all HG users and anyone interested in Glasgow. It's worth the £20 price - £17 at Waterstone's at the moment - and of course there is a copy in the Glasgow Room at the Mitchell.

Le dùrachd,

It was a wonderful read and very moving at parts. It really brought 1940/50s Glasgow to life and had some wonderful descriptions of well known parts of the city and city life.

John

I just finished the last few chapters tonight and I can confirm that they were the very moving parts. The descriptions of life in a single-end helped me get an understanding of how my Dad lived his early life; luckily his faither wasn't a total baistard like Robert Douglas's was.
