The Plaza dance hall on Victoria Road finally closed its doors ten years ago, and a planning application has now been lodged to demolish the once popular venue and replace it with housing.

The plan includes the retaining some of the memorable facade of the building which was one of the most popular of the city's 30 dance halls in its day.

A great shame, was surprised it hadn't been mentioned here before now. More details here:

I'm guessing this is the first part of the redevelopment of that area including the Larkfield Bus Garage site? The luxury apartment dwellers of the future down that way will get a grand view of the M74 extension and a lovely constant background rumble.

Dont you think it just goes to show the total incompitance of our deep pocketed ultra stupid council. Allowing another wonderful historic building to be demolished so as some fat slobbery guit sitting in his white marble palace in George Sq can get a holiday in Barbados out of this criminal action.

I was only there once - a Blur concert which must have been one of the last concerts played there if it closed down ten years ago.

A real shame, an other piece of Glasgows history gets demolished.

I often wonder where the fountain is now

I know what happened to it, but not where it ended up.

It used to be owned by Carnegies Leisure Group, who owned Bonkers to name but a few. When they sold it, the joiner, Gerry, removed it.... he never did say where it went.
When we were building privilege, we found the cast iron coat hangers with plaza on them... special 6 way coat hooks

Today's Evening Times (weekend edition, so available on Sunday too) has a centre spread with a pic of the current interior of the Plaza, as the demolition is due to start in the next fortnight.

Seemingly, most of the facade is to be re-used, although it'll be dismantled and stored off-site initially.

Bit of a rubbish single photo, given the exclusive access they claimed to have gotten, not at all the thorough survey we've come to expect as HG folk! I'll stick a pic of it online later if I can get one, since I think they still don't put the weekend edition online.

Last Wednesday. Hope someone saves the posters! They're old enough not to have the extra 1 in the area code. Ought to be put up in the People's Palace!

I saw this too - first Wylies garage....

At this rate Eglinton Toll is going to look like it was created in a time of White Render and not Queen Victoria's reign. :(

I'm sure the retention of part of the facade was a condition of the planning approval - it's time the planners got tough and said sory, planning approval revoked due to non-compliance with conditions and really hit these vandals where it hurts - in their wallets.

It wasn't listed, so they could have flattened it all had they chosen. I believe they are re-using some of the facade stonework, rather than retaining it as a whole, and it's being stored offsite until it's needed. Not quite sure how much of it they'll re-use, or in what way, probably a couple of blocks in the corner...!
