I was looking on the Scotrail website http://www.firstgroup.com/corporate/our ... t_rail.php
that ScotRail operates 95% of passenger train services in Scotland, linking the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness as well as the Caledonian Sleeper overnight service to and from London, and the picturesque routes of Fort William, Mallaig, Oban, Kyle and Wick.

Can anyone please tell me who owns the other 5%

It's accounted for by passengers on the East and West Coast main lines, I'd have assumed, though 5% seems like a strange figure. Goodness knows how they're defining that.

Other 5% is made up of Passenger using the services of other operators : Virgin West Coast, Cross Country, East Coast Trains (formally GNER) and the Manchester to Glasgow/Edinburgh services operated by First Transpennine where the service starts or terminates at a Scottish station.

Talking of the flood maybe one of the rail gnu's can enlighten me here.

Looking at Google Earth (which I need some serious lessons with) and the map that James posted on the first page. If I have it right it looks like the old Kelvingrove to Stobcross crossed the active line that runs to Queen St I think.



So that gives me a couple of questions

Were both these lines not in active use in parallel at some point, I thought they were, but sense dictates otherwise.

When the Kelvin decided to culvert itself through the tunnel would a great deal of the water not have went down the live line where it is crossed rather than going straight on into the Stobcross Depot tunnel.

I must have fouled up somewhere but it would be nice for somebody to set me straight

Been while since I was out that way, but it doesn't cross the line as such - it goes under it, so there's a considerable height difference. As much water as was birling down the disused tunnels that day, I don't think it was enough to reach the height of the active line.

Now I look at the image again I can see that it does appear to go underneath it. I'll need to pop down there for a wee look. I think you can see the portals from a rise near the new houses close to the Virgin gym

Great picture.
Small building top left, joined by a stairwell, is still in use but not as a railway property, last time I looked it was a fireplace and surrounds shop.
Most of the goods yard now forms part of Hamilton bus station.

The strange thing is , the photo that I scanned is quite small; there is a lot more detail visible in the digital image.

Hi!

Was in Hogarth Park on Edinburgh Road, just next to Alexandra Park in fact, and I happened to spot what looks like the remains of an old railway line, grassed up though, which runs from underneath a bridge on Edinburgh Road to somewhere. Does anybody have any info regarding this line? Where could you walk to NOW, in theory, following this line?

I only managed to walk from under the Edinburgh Road bridge until the next bridge, which seems to house a lot of Chinese people, who were not very pleased at all to see me.
