Why no National Galleries or Museums?

Postby Socceroo » Fri Dec 02, 2005 12:59 am

Talking to friends yesterday, the old topic of there being no National Galleries or National Museums in Glasgow came up.

NATIONAL GALLERIES OF SCOTLAND

Scottish National Portrait Gallery - Edinburgh
National Gallery of Scotland - Edinburgh
Royal Scottish Academy - Edinburgh
RSA Weston Link - Edinburgh
Scottish National Gallery of Mordern Art - Edinburgh
SNGOMA - Dean Gallery - Edinburgh

NATIONAL MUSEUMS OF SCOTLAND

Royal Museum - Edinburgh
Museum of Scotland - Edinburgh
Museum of Flight - East Lothian
Museum of Costume - Dumfries
National War Museum - Edinburgh

GLASGOW NATIONAL MUSEUMS? NEARLY BUT NOT QUITE

Museum of Piping - Partner of National Museums but not under its auspices - Glasgow
Museum of Country Life - Near East Kilbride

Any thoughts on the above? Remember these are Museums largely funded by the Scottish Executive, Edinburgh also has it's Council museums although not as many as Glasgow.

Dear Mr McConnell,

or maybe Mrs McConnell could answer this one?

Do any English cities outside London have National Galleries?

I believe Cardiff, Liverpool and Leeds have National Galleries and Museums.

Liverpool's being the Tate Gallery and the National Museums (consists of eight museums and galleries)

Leeds' being the The Royal Armoury (which is classified as a National Collection)

There are also seven National Museums in Wales - including among them the National Museum in Cardiff, the National Coal Museum, National Waterfront Museum and the National Roman Legion Museum.

Manchester does have the Imperial War Museum North, but I'm not sure if it is classified as a National Collection

In Northern Ireland, there is the government funded Museums Council - but this is more of a charity based organisation and none of it's museums or galleries have National Status.

There was talk about Glasgow attempting to get National Status for its collection, but although this would bring more money and take some of the burden off the council there is enormous civic pride in glasgow's collection which is the largest munciple collection in Europe. You might see a National Gallery open at some point down the line but to be honest I think this will be some point down the line. In the past ideas such as to make the Sherrif Court in Merchant City a National Gallery have been rejected.

The big question is - Is Glasgow Musuems better off as a Municple Collection or would it benefit more from being part of the National Collection?

What's in a name?

If any of the existing Glasgow Galleries or Museums had the prefix 'National' would it bring any advantages or disadvantages compared to their present status?

Or would the creation, if it were to happen, of a National Gallery of 'Something' in Glasgow be at their cost?

I'm not criticising the thought negatively, more thinking of the National Purse.

National Railway Museum is in York, although administratively it is part of the Science Museum.

I think that Glasgow's City Council run Museums should be left well alone and should where possible be free admission.

Many people who come to the city are pleasantly surprised that our Municipal Museums are free.

Surely a city of Glasgow's size and importance should have at least one such Museum without it being detrimental to the funding of the City's Municipal Museums.

How about the much discussed, much moved, but hopefully sometime ongoing Upper Clyde Maritime Museum becoming a National Maritime Museum.

The Scottish Maritime Museum which is located in Irvine, Dumbarton and Braehead have done a great job, but surely the Upper Clyde deserves a Museum of national significance?

National Maritime Museum Glasgow.........sounds good to me.

Does it? Based on what?

As far as great Art is concerned where would Glasgow be in Europe, top 20?

Thats true, people in Glasgow do get a bit carried away as to how great the place actually is. The best this, finest that, tallest this and so on... Im sure you imagine Munchen has a better collection though, sparking a 'best city' debate that could rage for centuries...

Please, please, please, don't take anything away from Edinburgh to Glasgow. As someone who goes through to Edinburgh every second Saturday, I am sick fed up up their bleating and moaning about weegies and how everything is a weegie conspiracy.

I try to tell them they're only the capital because their city became bigger first because of their abject and constant capitulation to the English.

I blame Irvine Welsh for the inferiority complex that they suffer from. Leave them with the national galleries, salt 'n sauce and Greyfriar's Bobby.

Do you mean the Glasgow Science Centre, which is not a national museum but does recieve funding from national sources such as Scottish Enterprise and the Lottery Fund / Millenium Commission.

I don't think that Scotland has a national science museum, which is a shame as a large number of the scientific, medical and engineering discoveries and inventions that we take for granted had Scotsmen involved. Glasgow would probably be the logical location for such a museum since many of these advances were made in and around the city or the people involved were from the area.
