Streets in Cranhill are called after lighthouses (Bellrock, Fastnet, Starpoint, etc.) whilst Carntyne streets are named after districts in Edinburgh (Haymarket, Merchiston, Newhave etc.)

Don't recollect Edinburgh City Council returning the compliment.

Is there not a Western Isles Street/Road in the place between Clydebank and Dumbarton that I've forgotten the name of? Not sure if there are others of similar names there.

Scottish Islands, Rivers, Bens and Glens seem to be the order of the day for most developers these days, along with a few tree spieces thrown in for good measure.

In the Braehead estate in Cathcart where I grew up the streets were named after Lochs (Lochmaddy, lochinver, Linnhe, Lochaline etc) and In Simshill (Kings park) the streets are named after Islands (Shetland, Orcades, Seil etc).

I remember a report in the paper a few years ago about a new estate in England where all the streets were named after war heroes and there was a huge outcry when one was named "Douglas Badder Walk".

We've got vaguely highland ones round here - Glenfinnan, Glenfarg, Arisaig, Dunkeld, Rannoch etc.

And the obligatory 'Kessington Square' developers hole.

Two young ladies of my acquaintance came down from the Hebrides to uni many years ago and spent their first afternoon in town trying - without success - to find a city centre street they'd heard somebody talking about, somewhere between Renfield Street and George Square, called Western Isles Street.

Think about it..........

Dundas was the Lord Provost of Edinburgh who was an ardent supporter of the Forth and Clyde Canal, Port Dundas being named in his honour :)

Western Isles Road, Old Kilpatrick. All the streets in that development are named after towns or islands in the Western Isles and theres alot of them too.

The Parkhall area of Clydebank is named after types of trees.

Milton, Glasgow, is named after towns in the Shetlands.

Knightswood. All the street names are lifted from from Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe. Why I know this. Who can tell ?
