All the street names in Knightswood Gate (I think!) are bird names....Swift Crescent, Kingfisher Drive.......and so on!

I remember a report in the paper a few years ago about a new estate in England where all the streets were named after war heroes and there was a huge outcry when one was named "Douglas Badder Walk".

Dave.

'Douglas Badder Walk' : someone with a rather warped sense of humour by the sound of it

This area was taken up with the rail lines in and out of St. Enoch's Station. At number 102 King Street stood a goods shed, just at the spot where the entrance to the car park is now. Osborne Street formed the northern boundary of the rail lines.

Great topic :)

The streets in Darnley are named after Highland Glens and the few street that make up Nitshill are named after Ayrshire villages.

There was a recent naming of a new street in Nitshil. Rosehill Housing Co-op built new houses and created a new street in Darvel Street. Following the pattern the new section was called Newmilne. The local Community Council and Rosehill wanted to commemorate a local dead politician and asked that the other part of Darvel be named Rose McCloy Gardens. We were told that a new protocal was inplace to prevent people's names so it was named McCloy Gardens.

This wasn't long after a street in Drumchapel was named Donald Dewar Way.

There is a section within the Council that takes responsibility for naming new streets.

Without besmirching the late Rose McCloy this phrase could certainly be employed rather widely to politicians considered not dead - in a physical/scientific sense anyway. Its only a matter of where you would start.

I think you should copyright it Alex.

What is the most beautiful-sounding street-name in Glasgow, past or present?

Also, what was the weirdest or most curious street-name.

That is certainly a weird one. Is it still there. Some say Custer is a German name, but to me, it sounds very Scottish. Personally I hate the man because of the way he behaved in the US Civil War. Troops under his command were out of control.

Always thought "Fifth Avenue" was a weird name for a sleepy wee street near Anniesland ::):

My granny lived in Spoutmouth (spelling?) which was opposite Schipka Pass. Always thought they were strange sounding names. The meaning of Sauchiehall Street makes it the most beautiful for me. I like the sound of it too.
