Derelict House, Ibrox

Postby Timchilli » Sun Nov 20, 2005 7:02 pm

Two late Victorian villas near the centre of Ibrox lie derelict. Evidence suggests that the houses were torched very recently (i.e. within the past year)

I have tons more photos, which I will upload onto my website.

These two villas are actually in Drumoyne rather than Ibrox, on the corner of Craigton Rd. and Edmiston Drive. They seem to have been unoccupied for a number of years now and I've never been sure why since they are substantial properties, albeit not in the nicest of locations. No doubt local vandals were responsible for the fire raising.

The area right beside these 2 villas until some years ago was the site of a large refuse processing plant run by the Council [similar to the one at Polmadie]. Now the site contains a huge Asda Superstore along with a MacDonalds and a Toys R Us store, all accessed from the other side at Helen Street.

So I wonder whether these 2 villas may have had Compulsory Purchase Orders slapped onto them at some point in the past and the ground on which they stand is scheduled for redevelopment.

I don't know if the properties were subject to Compulsory Purchase Orders. They were occupied until fairly recently.

More likely some developer bought them, abandoned them in the hope that they would meet the fate that they have, and then hey presto nice big brownfeld site next to the Motorway.

Although the houses themselves are quite tightly paired together, their gardens / land at the rear is quite sizeable.

Yes, I had noticed that as well.

Your comment about a developer having bought them is probably spot-on. The demand for new private housing in the locality is obviously there since a lot of building has been going on over the last couple of years between Edmiston Drive and the Motorway, ironically though most of it seems to have been on sites freed up by the demolition of council housing.

The photos above are taken of 167 Craigton Road, and there is evidence that there was a registered proprietor of this property as at July 2004. There is also an open letter from Glasgow City Council notifying residents on this street that CCTV was to be installed nearby so as to combat the rising crime rate in the area (this comes as no surprise, considering there are a number of looted handbags throughout the property).

I notice that there is an overgrown area adjacent to this property which has been fenced off. Was this part of the refuse processing plant, or was this the site of another residential property subsequently demolished?

The one on the corner burnt down a good few years ago... I can remember it.

The other one was just recently torched.... just noticed the lack of roof the other day

I lived across the road from them on shieldhall rd. (my parents still live there now)

The second one burned down not too long ago. It was occupied by an Asian family who had a LOT of dogs.

the one on the corner only burned down literally months ago,not years. then the other one followed suit weeks later...............smells like an insurance job,or someone decided to take a stand against who bought them

No, they've both gone now. Happened to be passing this afternoon. Site has been levelled, cleared and fenced in.

Yoinks! I had no idea that they had been demolished!

Here's a few more photos. I hope to get my website updated and released sometime soon, where I can upload all my shots.
