Cathcart Old Parish Church Ruin

Postby Snapshot » Tue Nov 01, 2005 7:39 am

Hi folks,

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some more information about the ruined church in Cathcart.

What I do know so far (from the Internet) is that it was the original Cathcart Old Parish Church, and that in 1931 the main church building was knocked down, and a "new" Old Parish Church was build about 50m behind it.

I was taking some photos of it last night, and want to post one on my blog, however I'd like to have a bit more information about it.

A local resident spoke to me as I was setting up the camera, and said that it was burned down by Oliver Cromwell, and some Knights of The Crusades were buried there. She learned this from a group of American tourist that she talked to one day on the grounds of the church. I ain't so certain about those claims, but would like to know more.

The church did have something to do with the Covenanters however, as there is a Martyr's Tomb (for 3 Covenanters murdered by government troops) in the graveyard - details here.

Here's one of my photos by the way:

So what's the story:

1. Church moves to new location, knocks down part of old church.
2. Church burned down by Cromwell, is rebuilt nearby.
3. Some mixture of both?

Thanks folks,

Alan

Number 1.

There are some old graves next to the tower that have swords engraved down the sides of them. The bell from the old tower was removed and installed in the new church tower across the road.

Probably the best place for the history of the church is the Coupar Institute library on Clarkston Rd.

Cheers, I thought the other story was rather far-fetched... :-)

In my defence, I had searched for the following match on all terms:

1. Cathcart Old Parish
2. Cathcart Old Parish Church
3. Cathcart Parish Church
4. Cathcart Church Ruin

and a number of other similar queries, but couldn't find a thread of people discussing the actual Cathcart Old Parish Church ruin... so I started a new thread about that.

Should I have tacked onto the graves post? The post was about graves, and well, this isnae about the graves, its about the building itself...

Cheers anyways for the pointer... sorry if I've trod on anyones toes.

New threads are good.

Anyway. I have an ancestor burried there so my Dad tells me. I don't have any other details on it. I need to ask him some more about it.

There is a wonderful grave stone designed by Alxander Thompson at the far end of the grave yard. Very easy to spot. It's right up beside one of the walls.

It's fine Snapshot :D I'm just obliged, as a moderator, to re-iterate this point to everyone... it keeps the place tidy-ish

I searched "cathcart AND cememtary" and got that thread, it also helps if you ckeck the "search for all terms" bit too.

Here's the Thomson designed monument, built for the builder of Holmwood House. James Coupers, the patron of Holmwood, monument was originally a Thomson design but was replaced by his niece when she dided and was buried in the plot some years later.

Not to go off the subject. It's just that I have been a member of other forums for a long time and I've never seen post being dismissed because there is another similar thread somewhere else. OK when there are threads with identical subjects I understand but when they are just similar I think let it run.

Just seems a bit severe.

I'm actually the nice guy! Fossy just locks the threads and there's no discussion! ::):

Let it go.

Snapshot, I have a magnificent book "cathcart and environs" which has some pictures of the old church before it was knocked down. I will work out how to post them here and try to have them up this evening...
