Star Bar and Ken Manners

Postby russ » Sat Oct 22, 2005 3:09 pm

Does anyone remember the 'Ken Manners Appearing here every Sunday' sign that used to hang outside the Star Bar at St Andrews Cross at Pollokshaws and Victoria Road?

It was a guitar shape and a total icon.

Has anyone got any photos?

::): Ken Manners I'd forgotten about that sign that was in the shape of an accoustic guitar and looked very 1970's graphics in a shade of brown.

I remember seeing the sign from the bus into town and often wondered what the Ken Manners gig would have been like. I'm sure the guitar sign was still there mid 1990's.

Where is Ken now?

Yeah that would be great. I keep meaning to pop in for a pint and ask about photos but I'm always heading somewhere else.

Thanks

Done the cheapest 3 course lunch anywhere bar none, 30 bob, £1.50 in new money but I'm going back 15-18 years now.
There probably was more nutritional value in the handfull of change you handed over for it and it was stricktly for the person with a totally cast iron constitution. The soup I recall was like water knocked stupid, and the mash totties, barffff! they copuld have used Smash, ye cannae go wrong wi that.
Place was full of corpy bus drivers necking a quick haulf n haulf between routes.

Thats a 20% increase, and it's still remarkable value.
In fact beak it down, thats and increase of 1.3% year on year, well under the inflation rate.
Magic!

If I remember correctly Ken Manners was replaced by the double act of Robert and May Millar.

Is Ken still with us? or is that the reason his stint ended!!
I used to pass it quite often with my friends. we were to young to get into the pub at the time. Never went when I had the chance.

I used to work down the road from Mcnees and would go in there after work on quite a few occasions and your right that Rab n May did play in there for a bit, god she wiz a big wummin and what a mouth on it 8O , ye widnae want to disturb her when she was beltin out one of her numbers. ie move, blink, take a drink etc.. or she'd be oan tae you, if you offered any kind of response I'm sure she'd have invited you outside to attend a clearing the air session.
"Haw, SSHHH, Ah bit o quiet fir the turn noo" was a shout often heard in jest.
I think they were booked for "entertainment" and stewarding duties.
