I managed the Spar in Russelcolt St in Coatbridge for a few months in 1997, was the first one I was in that sold buckfast, couldnt get away with the amount I had to order, used to get 5 cages worth in on the turs deliver (1 cage held 20case, 1 case was 12 bottles), so I got 1200 bottles, and that lasted me till the delivery on monday (just), it was on one 4' long shelf behind the counter, sold for £3.95 and I never saw any hassle with people buying it. Most were in their 30s at the time, came in bought a bottle of wine.

Nowadays, sadly, i think its the wee wankers that think that theyre hard men in groups, we know them, velour trackies, bitches in PJs the usual dregs.

....perhaps living in Coatbridge was too much...!

Buckfast is now Britain’s best-selling brand of fortified wine.

Sales of the controversial drink, which critics have linked to the Asbo culture, have soared by 40% in the past year to £31million.

Buckfast has overtaken Harveys Bristol Cream, the nation’s favourite sherry, as well as Martini and various brands of port such as Croft and Cockburn’s

this is the stuff you mean i found this in my local park i wonder if it will make a come back

the label draws your attention to think scotch what with lochs and thistles and yet the whiskey is spelled with an e as in irish whiskey.they sell it in asda so i think i will investigate further.

Does anyone know why the alcohol content in Buckfast is different in the Republic of Ireland than in the UK?

It ain't just the alcohol content. Look at the caffeine levels.

"Green bottle" Buckfast tonic wine, usually found in the United Kingdom
Red wine based aperitif.
Sodium glycerophosphate, an emulsifier.
Dipotassium phosphate, a protein stabiliser
Disodium phosphate, a stabiliser and emulsifer.
Caffeine, 37.5 mg/100ml (i.e. 0.0375 % w/v)
Vanillin

"Brown bottle" Buckfast variant, typically from Ireland
Red wine based aperitif
Sodium and potassium glycerophosphates - both measured at 0.65% w/v.
Disodium phosphate, a stabiliser and emulsifer.
Caffeine, 55 mg/100ml (i.e. 0.055% w/v)
Sulfite preservatives.

Back to the alcohol content. Is there perhaps a cut-off point in Irish legislation where the duty increases once the alcohol gets to 15%?

In the daily star they described it as an aperitif......imagine it...haw shug, gonna gies a swig of yer aperitif big mahn.

When they cleared the shrubbery from what was the disused platform at airdire, there was that many of the bottles on it, im sure NR couldve paid for the whole a2b extension by returning the empties
