Anyone ever heard of Hampden lager? Wasn't very strong, but was dead cheap, so for a couple of quid you could kid yourself on you were getting drunk.

Dexter, I remember Colt 45 as a lager, was it a 'forty-five' wine? I remember it around the time of 'Breaker Malt Liquor'.

Colt 45 was and still is another "malt liquor"

Was it a heavy duty wine in a can then? I always imagined it as a fancy sounding American lager.

Forge Lager by Tennents?..... forgery more like. This really was the king of pish watter.
On the can it had an actual photo of a bloke poking some hot coals ...it was so bad.
Another lightweight on sale about the same time was a lager called 'Charger' in a blue can with a picture of a piper on the front IIRC.

I'm sure this was the catalyst for the Chewin' the Fat sketch "It's never too early for a Fusilier" where they parodied a lame 1970's booze ad ::):

Colt 45 was a rival to Breaker. It was lager in the terms of how it was brewed. In the same vein as Carlsberg Special brew and Tennents Superlager. Not as strong as them but certainly a cheap and efficient way of getting drunk. One for your jakies who preferred a longer drinking time and shorter black outs.

How times have changed , in my time (Glasgow of the 50's) Buckfast was touted as a tonic wine. Who knows perhaps it was?
