Antiques warehouse fire

Postby clydebankcelt » Sat Aug 27, 2005 12:55 pm

I see the Antiques warehouse down at Yorkhill quay went up in a blaze. 50 firefighters to put it out.

Was this last night? There was some stink of smoke when I was on my home from Bastille.

Just about midnight apparently. Clyde expressway was closed most of the morning.

It's a miracle the Tall Ship wasn't affected.

Drove by it this afternoon - it's a blackened mess. My initial thought was that it was being demolished, but then I smelled the smoke…

Oh well - looks like that warehouse area will be cleared a lot earlier than expected!
Ehhh... cool. Whatever you say, I'm sorry. You're the man. The dude in the chair.

Interesting you thought it had been demolished. I cycle every day on the bridge over the expressway and when I look to the West, I see the modern buildings of Glasgow Harbour. I've always thought "how long before the Antiques warehouses are demolished to make room for more brand new residential buildings". And what do I see today, the hlaf of the warehouses destroyed by a fire. We'll probably hear very little about it in the newspapers, and in 10 years the Glasgow Harbour residential comlex will go all the way to the Tall Ship.

Or is it just me being grumpy and paranoid?

I'm sure some people will be thinking it's a possible insurance job?

I may be wrong here but I thought the antiques place had to come down for Glasgow Harbour anyway? I'm sure a new City Centre/West End road and possibly the proposed Bus/tram runs through that place, as the road is 4 lanes wide! Hell everything else along there is derilict.

As for the tall ship, t'was close and a old boat from the turn of the cnetury was lost in it too.

Perhaps they foolishly disn't sell to developers so they called in the 'fire brigade'.....

If you go the the Glasgow Harbour website it shows you plans for that area. It does indeed include the whole warehouse area. Here is proposed plan for Expressway and surrounding area...........Image

It just strikes me as an amazing coincidence. I was hoping these buildings would get to stay - its a shame that the docks are simply not going to exist any more - the Finnieston crane is going to be the only sign that anything industrial was there at all!

From what I've seen of the transport museum on paper it looks like a fantasic building.

I thought they had used the wrong security company for the quadrant.

The warehouses were coming down alright. The old Daewoo garage/warehouse has been knocked down for a while and the right hand side of the warehouses had had their tiles stripped off in preparation for demolition. The Antiques Warehouse had signs up saying "business as usual" so I was thinking their lease hadn't expired yet.

I dunno - it's all a bit dodgy.

That aside - I find it remarkable to see how much land is actually there. It's going to look so different!
