Yorkhill Quay

Postby Pgcc93 » Wed Jun 08, 2005 7:08 pm

Demolition underway at Yorkhill to make way for the New Transport Museum.

Some of the Sheds have already been demolished and several of the buildings are now empty. The nearby car showroom looks like it will be the last to leave the site.

hope they leave the cobbles with the rails set in
that would be just like them to remove real transport heritage
to build a transport museum

That was exactly my first thought when I saw those pics!

Would a tramcar be able to run on those rails? Glasgow tram gauge was 4'- 7¾" instead of standard 4'- 8½”. It was possible for Railway wheels to ride in the grooves of the tram rail but I don't know if trams could run on rail lines

the things people know i am mightily impressed. perhaps a stams train then going all of 100 yards should be an interesting job for the driver.

If I had one wish for the new Transport Museum it would be that the remaining locomotives, Caley 123, Gordon Highlander, HR123 and the GSWR pug could be returned to active service rather than being static exhibits, Caley 828 is back in service at the Strathspey Railway and Glen Douglas is at Bo'ness awaiting restoration. I am sure that they would be a major attraction on, for example, the West Highland line.

The Waverly on rails?

>>>Residents of national park welcome easier route to Glasgow<<<

Incidently, theres an exhibition of Zaha Hadid's competition winning proposal for the new Transport museum in the Transport Museum.

Some pics of the steam engines being transferred by road to their new home in the original Albert Drive Transport museum in 1966.

It'll will be a similar scene when they relocate from Kelvinhall to the new building at Yorkhill Quay.

According to a guy down the pub these locos were stored at Dawsholm Shed in Kelvindale which had recently closed prior to demolition. It's feasible I 'spose!?
