Pubs + architecture

Postby Ronnie » Tue Jun 07, 2005 9:38 pm

If you were showing some friends round the city centre, and they were interested in pubs and architecture, where would you take them? I'm thinking about pubs with brilliant interiors, and about pubs that are in brilliant buildings ...

Worth going into the Corinthian, if only to see the ceiling.

Off the top of my head, the G1 Group: Arta, the Corinthian, the Polo Lounge. Theres a pub on the corner of Mitchell St and the lane the Lighthouse is in, name escapes me tho.

The Counting House in George Square. Architecture is amazing, being the old BoS. As it is a Witherspoons Pub food and drink is cheap and it has the advantage of being non smoking throught.

Let's no feck aroon... Rogano. Interior is largely original 1930s and is the oldest surviving resturaunt in Glasgow.

Awright, so it's a cocktail bar, but it still counts.

Plus the staff are dead nice, and highly professional.

The Crystal Palace on Jamaica Street has the oldest elevator/lift in Glasgow.

The upstairs part of the Grosvenor in Ashton Lane, with the original 1921 barrel-vaulted cinema ceiling.

Stavka on Sauchiehall St, with it's 1931 deco facade and curious Russian-themed interior, although the door policy can be irritatingly picky.

More of a restaurant than a pub, but Bouzy Rouge on West Regent St, opposite the Odeon, has a fantastic Moorish tiled interior, believe it was a former Prudential Insurance office, and has historical interest in the shape of being the one-time address of Thomas DeQuincey. Was more accessible in the past as a plain old pub, but should be seen by more folk!

Thanks, folks, I feel a pub crawl coming on.
In the interests of research, of course.

The Old Toll Bar at Paisley Road Toll is well worth a visit - its Victorian interior is largely unchanged since the pub was fitted out in the 1890's. Don't go on a Friday or a Saturday night, though.

This pub is described in 'People's Palaces - Victorian and Edwardian Pubs of Scotland', which is a very good book on this subject. Written by Rudolph Kenna and Anthony Mooney and first published in 1983 by Paul Harris Publishing. Not sure whether it's still in print though.
