Mention of this in a previous post reminded me of a story a Driver told me of the last train to Gourock late one evening.
This was one of the famous "Blue Trains" before they modified them so that you couldn't see the view ahead from the front coach. To prevent reflections from the lights of the passenger area after dark, the driver had blinds that he could pull down, but normally he only pulled down the one behind him, leaving the middle and right hand on up. This meant that he had a clear view of the line ahead but could still see some of the passenger area, via the reflection in the windscreen.
One couple got on at Glasgow Central and sat a couple of seats back from the cab, and immediately on departure the young lady's head disappeared from view and strange expressions could be seen on the man's face
. Shortly before the first stop at Paisley they made themselves respectable, and the few other folk in the coach got off, much to their delight and as soon as Paisley was left behind they checked around before losing their inhibitions entirely
.
The driver told me that it was all he could do to keep watching the signals and very nearly missed the Inverkip Stop! The couple got off at Greenock none the wiser that everything they had done had been watched by the driver
