Jack The Lad, Argyle Street

Postby The_Clincher » Sat Feb 21, 2004 6:56 pm

Anyone remember a clothes shop called "Jack The Lad" (i think it was) on Argyle Street just along from Greaves Sports (towards the tolbooth) in the early 80's?

I remember i asked my granny if we could go in...they had coin op space invader cabinets just inside the door to entice the likes of me in....and the "claes" were towards the back of the shop.

Never got goin back much...my granny said there were "bad boays in there" (wide boys hanging around for an opportunity to shoplift)

I only wanted in to play "Defender"! :D

I remember Jack The Lad, waffle sta-press trousers (maroon) and chunky knit jumpers. The place to shop for the financially challanged which I was. A step up from WEWW, the clothes in Jack The Lad lasted 3 washes before falling apart.

A trip down amnesia lane. THANKS

That's the Trongate, not Argyle St, but yes, I remember everything
you mention about it. It was a bit of a dive inside, and I remember the
coin-op arcade games they had. The style of the writing Jack The Lad
was done in a sort of graffiti-like lettering.

I also owned a pair of maroon waffle sta-press trousers, and it's almost
certain that they were bought from Jack The Lad.

I remember "Jack the Lad" well. As far as i know it was run by a few Glasgow City councillors and sold "stay press" and "waffle trousers". It was in business roughly between 1980-83.
