Not sure if this is the best thread to put this, but moves are afoot to improve the driving experience in the Clyde Tunnel... Check out http://www.holdyourbreath.org/projectoverview/overview.html

The Lighthouse HYB Postbox with templates for suggestions.
Glasgow Science Centre HYB Postbox with templates for suggestions.

Open-topped bus guided tours - history of the tunnel.

Community Groups - consultation and art workshops, collecting memories.

Website - How do you want the tunnel to look? Questionnaire, Tunnel facts, Templates and Gallery.

May-Nov 05

Design Team - will create a design based on public submissions. This will be presented Glasgow City Council.

We hope the proposed designs will be accepted and implemented to coincide with the proposed City Of Light festival in November 2005. This will depend on Council schedules, as they are re-lining the tunnel this year.

The name 'HoldYourBreath'comes from the habit of local children, who try and hold their breath
from one end of the Tunnel to the other, as if they are diving under the Clyde.

Theres a bit on the north side of teh tunnel that I've wanted to put a massive spike on since pretty much the first time i went through it... its just calling out for it!!! Maybe a big twisty one... mmmm

I also know what i'd like to see in the tunnel....

Don't know if anyone else spotted it, but there was (and may still be) an installation in GOMA that comprised footage of kids taken as they went through the Clyde Tunnel (as passenger, not on a rope....)

As with most other patrons, it wasn't really attention grabbing enough to sit through, although the odd flash as you went through the gallery was sort of interesting, however, the breath holding experience was seen in the clips.

Can't remember for sure, but that may even have been the title.

That'll be Roddy Buchanan’s Gobstopper. He won awards for that film, a great wee loop of kid's holding their breath going through the Clyde tunnel. I saw it at a showcase of his at DCA. Have no idea if it's still at GOMA.

Another great film of his, Sodastream, shows people dropping bottles of ginger from chest height onto a concrete floor. It doesn't sound it, but it's really compelling. I could watch it for hours...

The bottles of pop, incedentally, were Garvies of Milngarvie. Do they still exist?

The clyde tunnel was an important element in my 'growing up'....I used to go there as a kid to 'winch'...and later used it to develope speed skating techniques...using eagle trucks and 30mm kryptonic wheels on a 42" board...scarey buisness...but it is kinda cool..I used to booze in partick as a lad and had to live in Govan for a short time...Walked through the tunnel to get home from the pub.........I believed that attack was the best form of defence and as I approached the Govan end, I used to howl like a wolf and chatter loudly like a chimpanzeee....strangly I never saw anybody at the Goven side.

On the subject of the Clyde tunnel, has anyone
seen this project, with some pics.

http://www.casm.net/go/installations/clyde

Will try and locate some specs about the construction,
all I know is that it took 7 years to build at the cost of
nearly 11 million and that started in 1957. Wonder how
much that is in todays money 8O

£171million would be the current cost based on a quick calculation - seems cheap doesn't it

Until you read that some mad Norwegians think we could build a tunnel to Orkney for £100m, yes...

They would only commission a tunnel, if there was
something they wanted, don't think Orkney has
enough resources. If there was military localities,
hell yes, it would have been built before the
military had even stept foot on the island.

Cool, the tunnel shall never be the same again.
Ambient trance blasting its way from end to end,
with the middle double white, done in pulsing neons.

With the way the city centre is getting illuminated,
who knows!

Well I was pretty close - I was using an inflation guide that is produced by the House of Comments Research Department. So MPs might be underestimating the costs of projects - why is this ringing a distant bell?
