I heard the rumour that Glasgow Council were wanting to use G1 but was owned by a rather wealthy Glasgow businessman. The Council had crossed him in the passed and he refused to sell the number when asked by Council officials, hence they asked for G0 from the DVLA. As far as I'm aware there are no other 0 plates out there - of course I'd love to be proved wrong

Anyone else heard this rumor?

As far as i was led to believe the Citroen and the plate belonged to the President of the RAC members club based in Blytheswood Square back in the mid to late 50's. The French pronounce the letters DS as Deesee which means Goddess. :)

I've only managed to track down one old registration book for my collection, 1969, and it provided these:

G 1 belonged to A. Anderson Esq. MD of James H. Galt Ltd. Ford dealers, Glagow C3 and spoted on a Triumph 2000 in Dorking.

G 2 John Haston, motor dealer, Newton Mearns.

RG 0 was on Lord Provost of Aberdeen's 4-litre Austin Princess.

The following are the letter O and not zero:

SO was assigned to Lord Provost of Edinburgh.

LMO Lord Mayor of London.

These two issues were arranged by Sir John Miller, who held both posts. There is no number after the letters.

I am sure his dad Wm King the bookies and off sales owner has the registration G101 hence the off sales name (I don't know what came first, the reg or the off sales name though)

G0 or a close approximation of it is still on the go. You see it sitting outside the city chambers and I quite often see it cruising along Dumbarton Road past my flat in Whiteinch. I have even seen it filling up in the petrol station in Whiteinch, complete with wee flag aflutter on the top.

Looks like a newer car right enough - but i am pretty sure the plate is still G0

Pretty sure I've seen GO outside the Royal Concert Hall in recent years. Again, it was a more modern car than the one in the transport museum.

In another aside/rumour I heard that Edinburgh's Lord provost registration (SO) was sold to a well-known petrol/oil company many years ago, (60s?) but Glasgow opted to retain their registration plate.

I have no actual knowledge, but knowing the Licensing Authority (dealt with them) I'd be mildly surprised if Edinburgh was allowed to transfer the Reg to an individual as it is a non-standard combination that was allowed specifically for use on the Provost's car, as was Glasgow's.

As an aside, anyone know who owns most of the E series in Glasgow, like E 2, E 4 etc.?

I was told some years ago, and forget now, but still see the Reg's occasionally. I do remember that the owners were described as "owning half of Glasgow".

It's a Volvo innit? I'm always seeing stretched Volvos outside the City Chambers.
