I wouldn't describe these as newspapers, nor would I describe them as reliable sources of information. Both are notorious defamatory rags.

I agree, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the Riverside Museum is still a cock-up!

It's not a fact it's your opinion. Which you've backed up with reference to a couple of paragraphs that you claim to have seen in a couple of English newspapers who couldn't find room for them in their on line editions.

Another barny erupting...

I wonder if setting aside 'what the papers say' argument for the time being and returning to the views about the Riverside Museum. What views have you personally heard expressed?

Due to the content of this and other forum threads, I asked my friends their views on the place. Almost all, without exception comment on the building and either how 'interesting or stunning' it looks. Of those who have actually gone in, all of them have been dissappointed by the layout and the feeling of being enclosed - many of them weren't in the old place and so don't have a model to compare.

I wonder what the results would be if we were to go and conduct our own surveys but of course how would we provide the evidence for the results?

'Disappointed' is the word most often used when I have asked people's opinions of the exhibits, too. I have only asked a few people, but only one out of those few said they liked the museum - and that person had not visited the old museum.

The ones with children said the children had enjoyed it, but were a bit less enthusiastic themselves.

Not a survey, not a representative group of people - not even evidence, but telling, none the less, in my opinion.

Well I finally got round to visiting the Museum on Saturday, and given the amount of negative comment that I had read on here and elsewhere I did not have any great expectations, but I actually thoroughly enjoyed myself, I thought that there was plenty to see and do, very much enjoyed getting out on the side of the river, the views were great. On the down side I felt that, being a railway enthusiast, there was not much on the history of the railway network, only the history of the locomotives - I would love to have seen the big layout of Carlisle Citadel that was in the original Museum on Albert Drive but it has probably been broken up by now. There were also some glaring errors in the captioning of some of the supporting photographs of Glen Douglas!!
I did enjoy the new model shop, great exhibits.

According to a railway magazine the Museum is in the early stages of negotiations with Summerlee museum to take at least one of the two remaining class 311 coaches and restore for display, the comment from the museum (also as I commented earlier) is that there is nothing about the local train services, so this exhibit would correct that.
