Faerie (or Fairy) Hills or Knowes

Postby jim » Wed Feb 04, 2004 9:57 pm

I'd like to compile a list of the Faerie Hills existing within the boundaries of the city.
Any suggestions?

http://www.hiddenglasgow.com/misc/index.htm scroll down to the bottom...

Achray Terrace down at Battlefield has Fairies Knowes carved onto a stone street sign. I never could find out anything more about it though, but its there!

Did a bit of reading...

Postby crusty_bint » Sat Feb 07, 2004 2:56 pm

Apparently... the name "Fairies Knowes" means "Watch Hill" and comes from the the Scottish Gaelic term "Faire" meaning 'watchfullness' or 'sentinel'.

Havn't come across any others in Glasgow tho, but check out
http://www.old-maps.co.uk
and do an address search.

That maybe makes sense for the one at Achray terrace - although its on a post at the bottom of the hill. But given that its in Battlefield... the notion that it could be a watch hill doesn't require a big leap of imagination!

It did seem a bit strange that it was at the foot of the hill... did a bit of reading on that too tho!

Apparently, the developer that first laid out Achray Terrace was a local and wanted to keep the old name of "Faerie Knowes" but his backer thought it was too common for his new up-market des-res'!

(cant remember the book... its in the Couper Institute tho if ur interested)

I've just tried out the address search on the old maps site ...

and it found half a dozen fairy knowes (or similar)

great search actually as it seems to automatically do partial string matches as well!!

TUMULI

Postby jim » Sun Feb 08, 2004 2:06 pm

Thanks for the interest!
I'd like to broadened the search to TUMULI within Glasgow.
I know of one, in the middle of the golf course in Pollok Park.

well Jim, you start these things...and so with imagination captured the search for tumulus begins!!

http://cookfmly.rootsweb.com/mcphun1835/tour_1.htm

Between Elderslie and Renfield is Renfrew ferry, where you obtain a near view of the ancient burgh of Renfrew itself. A coach is usually in waiting here to convey passengers to Paisley. The burgh of Renfrew gives the tite of baron to the prince of Wales. The first monarchs of the Stuart family had a palace here :--

"but of it no trace
Remains to tell the traveller where stood
The boasted structure"

In the neighbourhood is a tumulus said to mark the spot where Somerled, thane of Argyle and lord of the Isles, was defeated and slain by Angus in 1164.4 But these are themes on which we must not dwell.

tumulus

Postby jim » Mon Feb 09, 2004 6:37 pm

Thanks Sharon
I grew up on the banks of the White Cart so its good to hear it mentioned. The Tumulus in Pollok Park is'nt so far away from it either. I think I'll check out my OS and see if I can spot any more in the vicinity.
Have you come across the Glasgow Network of Aligned Sites thing yet?

Harry Bell is THE MAN. A pioneer. Its a great read too.

And another from Hugh MacDonalds "Rambles round Glasgow...

The antiquary or the relic-hunter will find but little to attract his attention in Govan. Formerly there was an ancient green tumulus called "the Doomster’s Knowe," near the bank, a short distance east of the ferry; but within the past few years, to the chagrin of the local Oldbucks, this interesting memorial of the pre-historic past has been levelled to permit the extension of a neighbouring dyework! Sic transit gloria mundi.

The Doomster's Knowe.... has an air of malevolent suggestion to it!!

And Lo a terrible curse was laid on Govan Parish by the Faerie Queen! She did spoileth the Seed of those Good Folk from here until the Crack O' Doom!* That begat Ye Neddes of Ill-Renown... (&c)

Could this also be known as the Devils pulpit :?:

I think Sharon and I checked out something like this a few years ago, can you recall where it was Sharon we went over a wall that said Danger Keep Out ::): to get to the waterfalls/gorge IIRC .

Do the fairies listen to the Devil's sermons???

Fairy Falls suggests a watrerfall though...and the pulpit had no falls!!

Could well be the same stretch of water though...it was my first thought too.
