Glasgow or is it Glazgow... what is it to you?

Postby Sharon » Thu Jul 24, 2014 8:20 am

Following on for a wee discussion on R4 this morning, the question of how Glasgow should be pronounced was raised, with a notion there should be a correct way.

There was a suggestion that glaswegians opt for a 'z' and the 's' came down from the highlands; or perhaps up from the south of Scotland, as I am a "s" person.

Obviously there are many other variants used commonly, my Dad for example always says Glesgae (or something like that).

So, how do you say your Glasgow?

It's always been a 'z' when pronounced by my parents, so that's how I pronounce it (over here in Australia).

"z" for me.

I often work in the Falkirk area and they seem to pronounce it with a really long "s". Like "Glasssss-go."

Interesting topic.

Z.

And for the avoidance of doubt I am not - nor shall I ever be - a Weegie, even if I do happen to live there.

On an extended rail trip around Scotland many years ago I heard it pronounced like Glass Cow by an American professor and his wife :)
in the English language one "s" is usually pronounced as a "z" whereas two would be "ss" as in the word cross. So it will always be Glazgow for me !

I got a box of sweets once from a shop on Cathcart Road. The box read 'Glassgow Sweet Shop'. ps I didni like the sweets that much, they were nice enough but just not to my taste.

Being half Dumfriesshire/half Glaswegian I've never really had a strong weegie accent, so I've always said it with a soft "S", rather than a "Z" sound.

GLAZ-GO

I'm GLAZ-GO born but Lanarkshire raised and don't even have a strong accent so you can't put it down to 'taxi driver' pronunciation.
