Thank goodness for the CW games

One good thing about these games is that a lot of the city is getting a long overdue tidy up. Even post boxes are being repainted. Although I feel sorry for anyone living near any venue. The recent Glasgow free magazine shows detailed areas where parking may well be impossible for both visitors and residents. There is also irritating things like for instance, access to Kelvingrove Park from Kelvin way closed off for bowling. I'm sure there are others and what about the road restrictions. Looks like the bikes for hire are the geme.

Yeah, I found out the other day that the walkway from Exhibition Centre station to the SECC is being closed from early July until after the games are finished.

Oh, and apparently said walkway is nicknamed "The Smartie Tube". Which is news to me...

I try hard to be positive about it but the amount of disruption it is causing or will be causing in my day to day work just perplexes me.
I'm also a tad cynical about where they have suddenly found all this money from to do long overdue maintenance.

It's already causing chaos and will only get worse. The cycle path around SECC already closed - despite encouraging us to take the bus, train or cycle.....doh.

And my Superintendent friend in Police Scotland has informed me that privately, they have some concerns as some of the plans haven't been tested out as he and his colleagues suggested so here goes Commonwealth chaos...!

I hope not but I wish I was anywhere but Glasgow during the games.

Are they closing Bell's Bridge as well, do we know?

Whilst it dosent specifically state that the Bells and or Millenium Bridges will be closed, it does look like public access to the SECC will be strictly prohibited.

In fact neither of the 2 pedestrian bridges appear on the Maps provided - I think that tells you what you need to know.

Jesus sufferin' fuck.

So if for example I wanted to go to the IMAX or if I was going to something at the BBC, I'd have to cross the Squinty Bridge or the Squiggly Bridge, and hoof it on down past the Odeon and whatnot?

Quite frankly unless you are going to the games or really have to go into Glasgow then I would avoid it. Don't bother going anywhere near Srathclyde park either.

Little chance of that. A: It's in the middle of bloody nowhere, and B: It's in "the country" as far as I'm concerned. Far to much greenery for my liking.

:) Don't have much of a choice since I live near there, and it's right beside the M74 off ramp for Motherwell, so a detour via the M8 and drop into the back of Motherwell via Newhouse, Newarthill and Carfin is in order.
Nice to hear there isn't much greenery in Greenock ::):

I'm not an outdoors kind of person. Probably a result of my folks dragging me round all these ancient monuments and whatnot when I was a kid.

The following information cannot be 'evidenced' but at a meeting held this week with some 'senior' police and council officials they indicated the following; vast underestimate of the amount of people coming to Glasgow to take part or view the Games.
Poor traffic planning and untested policing of events - despite Police leave being cancelled and all resources heading to the East of the City, there are now some real 'internal' fears.

It has also been confirmed that the hospitals within the region are to be put on 'alert' and there is a major concern among the NHS that they will be able to cope. Edinburgh and Stirling hospitals will also be brought into the 'party'.

To quote one attendee, "We've known about this event for the last 8 years, we knew about it when we won the bid to host and we've thrown resources at making Glasgow's East look good without thinking the whole thing through." Another voice pipped up, "It's only in the last 18 months we've gotten serious and I think we're seriously flawed."

This fills me with confidence, not....

Indeed. The phrase "Couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery" springs readily to mind.

Also "Dog's breakfast" and "Pig's ear".

I've seriously considered moving out of Glasgow in order not to both be considered to have - as a resident - supported this shite and to have to pay for it. Except that that all of us Scots will have to anyway.

I accept Crusty Bint's argument (from some time ago) that it may well be an excuse to spend money on the East End. Christ, I spent a decade living yards from the Athletes Village. It sure needs it.

But we're now on the third cycle of 'if we demolish the places where poor people live and build new ones, it'll all be fine.'

It won't.

Other than just passing through on my way up to see my friends in Perth next weekend, I think I'll avoid the city for the duration of the games as well.

I've a ticket for a show at the BBC on the 25th, but I can just as easily not go cos it's free and I'll not be be out of pocket.
