I wrote this a few minutes ago... for all our brave boys who never came home..

All no be back Ma.. thote ad say,
Ye might wait at the station,
Ave seen oor hoose the last time noo.
Ave done it fur oor nation..

As a lie here on this mud and dirt,
A thote aboot yer face,
Worn oot wae work and worry,
Life fur you wiz wan disgrace.

A hoped that a could gie ye mer,
Come hame and make ye proud,
Insteed all come hame cauld and still,
And wrapped up in a shroud.

Dont greet too much ma, please fur me,
Jist mind me when am wee,
When you nursed me thru ma measles
And put oitment on ma knee.

This wisnae meant tae happen ma,
A want tae jist come hame..
But ma breath is getting slower ma,
And am whisperin yer name.

Their hauding up ma heid ma ,
And straightenin ma tammy,
Am sorry ma tae leave ye,
Aw ma life a loved ye mammy..

How many bodies were actually returned from France during The Great War?
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Great posts.

I've started to document the story of my grandfather and a picture he brought back from France. I want to finish it in time for the centenary. I logged on to Ancestory.co.uk for the first time ever and after a few minutes I found his service papers.

Eighteen years and one month old - he proudly signed.

Going by the picture and the records he served with the Rifles in the HLI - I think.
Yes HH,I know

About 80% of WW1 soldiers actually returned from the war. Remember there was a vast back up. My grandpa's brother drove narrow gauge steam engines up to the front. He had been a railway fireman and got called up to the "ROD" which I found out was the railway operating department.

Oh I thought Robertpool referred to dead bodies.. I wouldnt think many came back at all or not many, I think the ones buried here were maybe shipped home injured and died here. could be wrong though.. maybe it depended if they died at the end of the war and were brought home. Its so sad for families whos sons are buried so far away they never got to visit..
